The puppies are German Wirehaired Pointer mixes. At age 61 I became something I HATE . . . an irresponsible pet owner bringing an unplanned litter into the world.
All but the 2 puppies we wanted to keep went to great homes. When they were born I began networking with the GWP rescue in Kansas for input. Since they look like GWPs it was recommended that we dock their tails to GWP standard and have their dewclaws removed, both of which we did. We asked $75 for each pup. Each pup left our home after getting their first 5-way, heartworm pilling that covered intestinal worms and tapes, and a bag a puppy food.
Had we not been able to find homes, a rescue in the Houston area was going to let me "foster" them until she found good homes for them.
So . . .
before you all HATE me, let me share my story with you.
Our GWP came to us as a stray. My daughter found her running through 4 lanes of traffic in Houston in 2004. At the time her Boxer and Cocker Spaniel were geriatric and senile, so she could not keep Mags when we tried to find her owner. Her vet was kind enough to keep Mags for something like 7 to 10 days, AT NO CHARGE. Can't remember. I would have to go through my records to know for sure.
GWPs are rare in Texas so we figured we would find who she belonged to. We listed her on the internet everywhere, posted signs all through the part of town where she was found, and notified all the vets in the area.
Just in case we could not find the owner I began networking with a GWP rescue as I knew nothing about the breed and wanted to make sure a GWP fit with me and my dogs if I were to bring her home. As it was, two of the vet techs wanted her too.
The rescue and another rescue in Houston told us not to give Mags to ANYONE unless they could provide proof of ownership in the way of vet records, pictures, papers, etc. Both the vet in Houston and my vet in nowhere Texas thought she was about 2 years old. The only person who contacted us told us she had had Mags since she was a puppy, but had no vet records, papers, pictures, rabies tag, etc. Next thing we knew, this same person posted a GWP missing 5 days after my daughter had found Mags.
She came to me with heartworms and VERY needy.
Neither vet could find a spay scar, but she has NEVER EVER gone into heat in all these years, and we all felt it best not to put her through a surgery she might not need. Oh top of all this, she has been with intact male dogs the entire time she has been here, both our dogs and visiting dogs.
So . . . January 17 we had a HUG surprise. However, she needed an emergency c-section half way through birthing, at which time we had her spayed. She also did not have enough milk, so we spent a fortune on milk replacer. She has been a GREAT mom, and still "cleans" up after the pups if I do not get to the stuff in time.
It is a fault for GWPs to have any black on them, and Mags is liver and white, so I haven't a clue where the black comes from, and I am pretty positive the Boston did not get to her. He is neutered now. The pups we kept have the wirehair coming in and will tick out more.
We had one family drive two hours each way to get a pup. They had an older English Pointer and wanted a puppy. They chose the puppy that looked most like a German Shorthaired Pointer.
Another drove from an even further distance to get the other pup that looked like a German Shorthaired Pointer but without a mask. They have over 2,000 acres and ranch and farm, and used to train English Pointers. When I asked the 12 year old son if I could kiss the pup one more time before they drove off, he said, "who would not want to kiss this puppy!"
One pup went to a family a few miles away, and the last went to 2 women who share a home with 3 kiddos.
I did love every second of the birthing, supplemental bottle feeding, and thank goodness finding great homes as I was totally in love with them all, and REALLY worried that because of the economy we would not be able to find homes for them.
With the emergency c-section, spay, milk supplement, tails, dewclaws, shots, worming and food, and advertising it has cost us a fortune leaving me unable to buy my medication for February, but I had to do what I had to do.
So . . . meet Idgie and LG (Little Guy) under the alligator jaws of Shiro.
