That's why it's diluted. I found a page with some uses/dilutions at http://www.healthy-health.com/site/844294/page/541843 .

The Cure Is in the Cupboard by Cass Ingram is supposed to be an excellent book on oregano's uses. It's pretty cheap so maybe I'll spring for a copy. I'm trying to get away from paper books though and build an elibrary on my Kindle where they take up no room and are searchable. The really old books are available and the newer ones are available but these middle ground ones are still in copyright protection, but the publisher isn't putting it out as an ebook.

I got The Cure is in the Cupboard today and I'm really impressed with it. For some reason I thought it was old, but the copyright is 2008. It has a fair bit of info in general about oregano, and dozens of treatment protocols by illness. Dr. Ingram (a physician and researcher) tells you a bit about the illness, various other alternative treatments and then the oil of oregano protocol. The appendix's tell you conditions by body region and what bacteria/fungi/parasite etc. you can use it for.

I wish I could have gotten it as an ebook, but it's definitely worth $13.57.

He makes it very clear that he's not talking about the kitchen spice and that all oil of oregano's are not equal. In fact, he thinks many brands are made with inferior oregano (such as so called Spanish oregano) and won't work properly. He doesn't mention brand names, but says "only certain species of oregano qualify for making the oil, and these species are difficult to obtain. A blend of these species is emulsified in extra virgin olive oil and found in brown amber bottle with an eye dropper (blue-label brand)." This (along with other things he said about where it comes from) sounds to me like North American oil of oregano which is what I had in my cabinet just in case I got a cold or something. But I hadn't ever used it.

After reading a good bit of the book, and all the things he talks about I decided to rub one drop on a painful, swollen joint in my hand. He said it was a potent anti-inflammatory (both topically and internally) and is an anti-pain agent with morphine-like properties. I really wasn't expecting much for just one application of one drop but I was wrong. It noticeably took down the swelling and pain! He said to use it twice a day until the conditions resolves so I put on another drop tonight. I can already see it looks less swollen, feels less painful and I have greater grip strength. It's kind of hard for me to believe, really. I also took two drops orally both times - it has a very spicy oregano taste which didn't really bother me but he said you can mix it with some water or juice too.

Btw, he said it's safe for pets and children too.

Aw Sally! i'm so glad it's working for your swollen joint! i've been telling my dad about it as he suffers from arthritis. Does it smell alot on your hands and does smell subside after awhile? I've taken it orally now a couple of times, and the taste lingers for awhile in my mouth ( i mix a couple of drops with 30ml water, swished under tongue then swallow). Is it ok to take if you're also taking tylenol?
Memo's breeder told me to put a drop every day in dogs food...we've been doing that couple wks now, and Memo had yeast infection that cleared up pretty fast!

I finally broke down today and ordered some glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM - between my hand (which I injured with Buddy) and two artificial joints in my feet I was starting to feel like an old lady! My feet are getting better now that we have the Segways and I'm not walking Buddy miles everyday. That dog's been hard on my joints! lol. But I think I'm getting things back under control again.

I have no interest in non-natural remedies anymore. I have no confidence in their integrity. A few years ago my MD gave me a few different pain med samples - Vioxx, and some others I don't remember right now but I never took them. Just set the bag by my Dad's (who was also a MD) and said I'd rather be in pain. Sure enough, everyone of those drugs was either taken off the market or given black box warnings within a year. It still makes me angry to think that Merck, makers of Vioxx that killed tens of thousands of people, knew for years it was not safe. According to internal emails, there was a concerted effort to bury the negative evidence and even distort the drug trials by excluding heart patients from the Vioxx studies so that, "...the rate of cardiovascular problems for Vioxx patients would not be evident." But they build the cost of the lawsuits into the price and nobody goes to jail. It's disgusting and makes me ashamed of my medical colleagues for not learning about natural remedies. People need help to get better, not something that's going to make them worse off a year later.

Anyway, yes there is an oregano smell for awhile. It makes me feel Italian! But you can take capsules too so you don't have the taste in your mouth if you're just using an oral application. If you go to North American's website you can see many Oregano products. I wouldn't buy them there because you're paying list price. Vitacost.com is much cheaper, but you can see what's available.

I don't know about taking it with Tylenol. I don't take it anymore because of how hard it is on your liver. People think alcohol is the leading cause of liver failure, but it's really acetaminophen. And if you take a Tylenol and have a drink too - uh oh! I've done enough things in my life to hurt my liver, now I need to be good to it. lol.

Is that what your Dad takes for his arthritis? Because Tylenol's a pain killer, but not anti-inflammatory so there are probably other (natural) things he can take that might work better for him.

That's a cool story about Memo's yeast infection. This book says it can kill all kinds of fungi, virus' and bacteria. Glad it helped Memo. I'll remember that in case I ever need it with Buddy.

Well, here’s another use for it! For the past 4 weeks, my index finger has been swollen [twice it’s size] with a red rash over it. This subsequently spread to my other index finger and onto the middle finger. Now, I am lazy when it comes to going to the doctors so I left it for a couple of weeks thinking it would go away, erm, no it just got worse, so I eventually give in and went. Doctor very puzzled so prescribed a course of penicillin and hydrocortisone cream. One week later, course finished, no change to fingers. So went back to see different doctor [always good to get another opinion – or is it?]. This doctor had no idea either. She was sure it wasn’t fungal, and surprised the penicillin didn’t work, so she prescribed 'aciclovir' – with the thinking that it might be some sort of viral HSI infection, although she admitted she really didn’t have a clue and ordered a whole series of blood tests as well.

Anyway, I was so interested in the discussions on this thread that I ordered some oil a while back for Jakey and have been giving it to him. Well, I decided I was NOT going to take the 'aciclover' and figured I had nothing much to lose rubbing the oil onto my fingers – so I did this once a day for 3 days. Now, if I tell you that there was a difference from the first day to the second I do hope you will believe me, because it is true.

4 days on, my left index finger is completely clear of the rash, my right index is almost back to normal size and the rash is virtually 80 per cent gone. I’m staggered! Seems this amazing stuff is also good for skin rashes that even doctors cannot diagnose!

Before, see how swollen
the finger is compared to
the others, and the rash
covers the area between
the finger creases:

4 days on, see how the finger
has reduced in size and the rash is only
visible now towards the top crease! Amazing!

I’m making a second post on this because I would like any thoughts/opinions/ideas on this. As I mentioned above I ordered this oil for Jakey and have been giving him one drop a day. Now the instruction leaflet that came with the oil states that [for humans anyway] they should take:

Quote:
“one drop twice a day, working up to 5 drops twice a day........Take for a period of 15 days and then stop for 15 days. Then repeat the process”.
So my question would be – is one drop a day enough for a 20kg dog? And should I also then put him on a 15 day on/off cycle too? When he was on homeopathic remedies he cycled 4 days one treatment, 4 days the next and 4 days a third treatment, then 4 days off everything. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts one this and whether anyone else is giving it to their dogs at all? I think I’m probably inclined to go with an on/off cycle but would be interested in any views on this.

That's AWESOME, Stephanie! I've got so many stories since I originally wrote too that I can't believe how great this stuff is! I've used it for so many things - it truly is amazing.

I had given some to our son and he sprained his ankle pretty bad. He had it in a brace and was taking ibuprofen constantly. Then he was going to come over for Christmas and thought "Mom's going to see me limping and ask if I tried the Oil of Oregano" so he put some on and couldn't believe after just 10 minutes how much better it was! He took off the brace and spent the whole evening here. He said he felt kinda silly for not having tried it before.

Our son-in-law was here at Thanksgiving and complaining of carpel tunnel. Wanted some ibuprofen. I said, "try this" and gave him the oil. He's looking very skeptical (doctorate in psychology, so maybe it comes with the territory) and a few minutes later - he can't believe it either!

Plus I got my own stories of how it's helped me. That book is a great reference.

Dragon, it does taste bad - dilute it in water or juice or take the capsules if you need to use it orally. Buddy really hates the smell too. Works better than bitter apple, lol!
