Yes the birds do look funny, many of them build their nests on and in the cliff ledges because they are safe there from any predators, also, their eggs are particularly ovoid so they go round in a circle and they don't fall off. They nest all along the cliffs where its suitable, and it really is amazing to see them. Most of these birds spend the winter months out at sea so spring/summer is the best time to get good views of them and their babies. You can see in this picture the kittiwakes are all on nests with babies in them. Not all the birds are on nests - some are too immature for breeding this year, but they stick together anyway.
