Our new boy has had the runs for weeks now. Took him to the vet. Gave him meds to try to "bind it together" not working. Could it be the food? We have him and Sweet Pea, female sister, on Wellness Puppy. She is doing fine.

Have you tried a bland diet (chicken and rice) for a while?

I'd feed chicken and rice for awhile to give his tummy a rest you can add about a teaspoon of PLAIN can pumpkin to help firm it up - not too much or it will have the opposite effect. Hard to say if it's the food has he done well onit before? If so probably not and you can slowly introduce it back when his stools firm up by adding it to the chicken and rice. If it's a new food did you switch over too fast? Or maybe it just does not sit well with him.

You may also want to add some pro biotics to his diet . If he has has loose stools then the good bacteria in the intestines which should be there is most likely gone and should be replaced .
You can get some pro biotic powder or gel like Bene Bac at a pet store like petco / petsmart .

Buddy just went through this, following his stay for a week at a kennel. We gave him probiotics (which he normally gets at home, but hadn't had at the kennel) and a mixture of 50% rice with 50% dog food. We also gave him 2 charcoal capsules which firm up the stool. (This is good to have around for humans too.) Dr. Pitcairn's book says you can give activated charcoal every 3-4 hours for a 24 hour period (except sleep) if needed. It works quite well. We didn't have to give more than 2 caps in a 24 hour period, but we did have to do it for several days since the loose stool would come back. I had looked for the canned pumpkin, because I heard it worked well, but could only find the pie filling.

The biggest danger is dehydration so be sure he gets liquid - maybe broth - and is peeing regularly. If he starts to seem weak or lethargic you should bring him back to the vet.

Let us know how he's doing!

We took him to the vet last week and they have him something to bind him up but is it not working. He has been on this food since we got him back in June. He is on Wellness Just for Puppy Dry food. It has the following Ingredients:

Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Barley, Salmon Meal (a natural source of DHA - Docosahexaenoic Acid), Canola Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), Ground Brown Rice, Tomato Pomace, Rice Bran, Tomatoes, Natural Chicken Flavor, Rye Flour, Carrots, Spinach, Sweet Potatoes, Apples, Blueberries, Ground Millet, Ground Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Minerals [Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Copper Sulfate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite], Vitamins [Beta-Carotene, Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Vitamin A Supplement, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B-12 Supplement], Choline Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Taurine, Mixed Tocopherols (a natural preservative), Chicory Root Extract, Garlic, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Green Tea Extract, Dried Lactobacillus plantarum, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation products.

It seems to have the probiotics, at the end of the list, in it. Should we try another Food. He is not lethargic.

Is the canned pumpkin okay? I think we will try the Charcoal. Where can we get this. We did try the chicken and rice did not help.

Did you bring in a stool sample at all? Sometimes dogs need a complete tummy rest. A good 24 hrs of NO food at all. I had to do that with my Duey and that was hard since he was already underweight, but it got him all straightened out.
