I have made Doggie Oats from Dr. Pitcairn's book. Buddy loves it. The recipe is:

  • 5 C quick oats (makes about 11 C when cooked)
  • 3 lbs (or 6 C) raw ground turkey (or whatever)
  • 1/4 C veg oil
  • 1 C cooked vegetables (or less raw, if grated or juiced)
  • 6 tablespoons Healthy Powder (see below)
  • 4 teaspoons KAL bone meal
  • 10,000 IU vitamin A (optional if using carrots)
  • 400 IU vitamin E
  • 1 teaspoon tamari soy sauce
  • 1-2 cloves garlic

Cook the oats, mix it all together and freeze in whatever size container you like. Instead of the added vitamins in the above and Healthy Powder, I pierce & squeeze the contents of one Carlson's A,C, E vitamin which has the equivalents of the ACE listed.

If your dog doesn't tolerate grains, you will want to adjust the recipe and probably add more meat. Also, for each pound of meat, you may also substitute 1 pint cottage cheese + 4 eggs, or 16 oz tofu + 4 eggs. Add the eggs while the oats are warm to help set the mixture.

Healthy Powder:
  • 2 C nutritional or brewer's yeast
  • 1 C lecithin granules
  • 1/4 C kelp powder
  • 4 tablespoons bone meal powder
  • 1,000 mg vitamin C or 1/4 teaspoon sodium ascorbate)
The above makes a bunch of powder that you can use for many batches of food. Just put it in a ziplock and use as needed when making the Doggie Oats.

Dr. Pitcairn says this can be the mainstay of your dog's food, so you probably only need to give recreational bones to chew on for their teeth. It makes about 18-19 cups and his daily ration is:

Toy (up to 15 lbs): 1-2C
Small (15-19lbs): about 4 C
Medium (30-60lbs): 6-7 C
Large(60-90lbs): about 8C
Giant(>90lbs): 9+C

I used to make homemade food, now I raw feed. When I did it I would use ground turkey carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, (or whatever veg. you have) brown rice, olive oil, and ground flax meal. I would cook it in chicken broth till done. I did not really follow a certain recipe. Sometimes I would cook a chicken and de bone it and add all kinds of veggies and brown rice. Georgie loves all kinds of fruits so I would add them too. Remember onions are bad for dogs. I would also feed a raw egg a couple times a week. Some people make like a doggy meat loaf. You would just make it like people meat loaf without onion and salt.

We just ordered a bunch of 80/10/10 raw mix from Simple Pet Foods and some Preference from The Honest Kitchen (after a discussion on another thread). We don't have it yet, but I'm looking forward to trying it. It certainly seems very easy and should be nutritionally balanced as well!

I found a few recipes this morning and I am mixing and matching and making a few batches of food up as week speak. I am going to cook them in muffin pans, so they will be individual sized and can just grab out of the fridge or freezer. I will let you know how they go

So Baby loves the homemade dog food! I kinda just mixed 2 recipes together with what I had at home. I made 2 different kinds.....one that had rice and chicken and one that had oats and chicken. Since they both had eggs in them, they are kinda like queches.
