Default Coconut?

OK, so it was my fault. I made a carrot cake last weekend, and hadn't put the remaining approximately 2/3 of the bag of flaked coconut away--but it was WAAAAAAY back at the back of the counter.

Either yesterday or the day before, Wally managed to snag it. I found the shredded package in the backyard.

So--anyone know what the side effects of approximately 2 cups of flaked coconut might be? Other than his stool being a bit firmer (not a bad thing-I haven't had to wipe his tushie for a couple of days!) I haven't noticed anything...

I don't know, but I'd call the vet, if you want an answer right away.

Wally has good taste!! LOL I have never heard of coconut being on the list of things bad for dogs. It is fatty and the bagged stuff has sugar in it.

I ran across this article about coconut oil for dogs, which was pretty interesting. Excerpt:

Dogs and humans can both benefit from unrefined or virgin coconut oil, and dogs love the taste. It is important to start slowly, building up to the recommended dose. Coconut oil can cause detoxing symptoms as it kills harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts, and fungi- so headaches, fatigue, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms are common if given too much too fast.

So you might be on the lookout for that, but otherwise it sounds like you'll be fine.

Thanks everyone. We actually have an appointment this afternoon for Wally's sister-dog Carli. She's feeling poorly, and at 14 1/2 with breathing problems to start with, I'm quite worried about her-couldn't hold down her dinner last night and really gasping for breath. Wally was quite concerned, didn't jump on her or harrass her at all. Just came up to her and looked at her with his head cocked to one side like 'what's wrong with you?' Wally is getting weighed and his nails trimmed (that should be fun!) so I will ask them about the coconut as well!
