Default top five best boxer dog foods?

To remove this ad please Register
As a group of very knowledgeable boxer owners with many opinions about everything, who can knowingly state what is the best food for the boxer breed?

How about the top5 foods (packaged and store bought)for the boxer?

I'm currently feeding Nutro natural choice large breed puppy to my 8 month. Not sure if this is the best I can do for my girl.

Nutro Natural Choice is not a good food. It only has one protein in the first 5 ingredients, and the remain 4 are poor quality fillers. Nutro Ultra is the best food that Nutro makes. Its holistic and had two protein sources in it top 5.

As for the top 5, I think that would be difficult because there are many factors with every dog. Some dogs do well on grainless food (Timberwolf) and other do not do so well. Some dogs have sensititve stomach and can only eat a duck and rice brand, and others may use something that is more price effective.

My personal top three in each category would be:

Price -
Canidae
Nutro Ultra
Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul

Grainless -
Timeberwolf
Solid Gold Barking at the Moon
Innova EVO (not suitable for puppies)

Sensititive Stomach -
Cali Natural - Lamb and Rice

Canadae just changed their formula. They have added lots of new grains and has increased their price. Our favorite pet store no longer even carries it. They have also switched manufactures to Diamond, a company involved in many recalls.

We love Fromm Four star Salmon or duck and Nature's Variety Instinct (chicken or rabbit).

They added different grains including millet, peas, barley and rice bran. The old formula only had brown rice. They also changed the fish sources they use to include more generic and less specific types of fish (lower quality). They also switched manufactures to one which has been involved in several past recalls. They are also down sizing their bags of food but not lowering the price. They have lowered the quality of their product to save money because rice is so expensive, yet are raising the cost.

If you've been feeding it recently you likely have the new formula. Many people noticed major digestive upset in their dogs when the formula changed. They even changed the food before they changed the label, which really made me mad. Some dogs can tolerate the new formula but I've heard many who cannot. Many people have reported a drastic increase in stool volume in their dogs. Our boston terrier breeder even had three of her adult dogs poop in their crates when the food changed (she didn't know it changed because the ingredients on the bag were still listed as the same).

If you're feeding it now and it agrees with your dog there may be nothing wrong with it. Our local petstore owner said that of all her customers who used to buy Canidae only a few had dogs who were able to tolerate the new version. She decided to stop buying it because she felt the company was deceptive in their switch by not telling people BEFORE they changed the formula.

I've posted this before but I'm going to do it again because I love this site...

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com

They do favor a grain free diet and this may or may not work for every dog, but their reviews are great.
