Smile On Tuna...

Hi Chewy!

Great question, and I don't claim to really know, but I can tell you about how I go about trying to feed by dogs the healthiest food, because I think it's great that you're trying to make sure you feed her the right food.

Anyway, first, I try to feed my dogs "real" food. So, believe it or not, I have never ever bought dog food. I feed them chicken, eggs, turkey, peas, carrots, miscellaneious vegetables, beans - cooked mildly, in the winter, and just a few carbs like corn, rice, and wheat.

(The vegetables I have to season really, really well with salt and oil, otherwise, just like us, they won't like them. )

Tuna though, has a high level of mercury in it, so, me personally I just don't like to take that chance. It's up to you, but I have never fed my dogs, or cats even Tuna, b/c of the high level of mercury concentration.

Softer fish, with white flesh, don't absorb mercury as much, so they may be quite a bit safer.

Anyway, hope that helps!

Beth

Default

I've made homemade treats with tuna before, but never fed it right from the can. As a treat I'm sure it's fine, but the mercury worries me also. We use salmon on occasion as a training treat because it smells so strong it really gets their attention.
