Default Does a new puppy "need" puppy food?

i've read here and there that puppy food isn't really needed. What are your thoughts on feeding puppy food?

A friend of mine is a well known boston terrier breeder (featured in boston quarterly this month!). She told me that puppy food is not necessary once the dog leaves its mother. She usually buys one bag of puppy food and once it is gone they go on an all life stages food. The added calories and calcium can actually hurt a puppy's growth, especially in larger breed dogs. I wouldn't do a high protein food as a puppy either though. We fed Boo Fromm Four Star Salmon as a pup. If I had a puppy now I think I would feed The Honest Kitchen.

I can have her email some of the research she used for her decision, if you would like.

yeah if you can get some of the research that would be great.

I read about the calorie issue with puppy food as well.

We keep ours folded away in the basement.

Never really went over well, to say the least.

Here is what Pamela sent me... I hope this helps

Hi Andrea - I'm at work, so I don't have anything with me; however, if you do a Google search for Pat Hastings, I believe you'll get some hits that will provide you with more concrete evdience. She's viewed as an expert in structure and puppy evaluations as well as nutrition, so I'm sure you can find something useful.

I did a quick search and found a few links that you may find helpful:

http://www.heartlandgdr.org/why_we_d...puppy_food.htm
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...6101253AAHxtLZ
http://en.allexperts.com/q/German-Sh...puppy-food.htm

Some of the links also include differing points of view, so each person can make informed/educated decisions, but I can tell you first hand, that since I quit feeding puppy food, my dogs have all developed better fronts (legs, chests, feet) skeletally, so I will continue what works for me.

Hope this helps...
