It's been a long while since i've had a puppy of my own. Any tips or tricks you can suggest to make the house a safer place?

Are you doing crate training?

Just make sure you have plenty of chew toys!!!
Make sure there are no wires down low available for puppy to get at.

Getting down at "puppy level" is a good way to spot hazards you may not have thought about.

I would always say to my kids "if you like it and you want to keep it put it away" lol they can get into mischief. I also had to move my recycling crate as she loved emptying it - I could handle that but then she would shred the recycling up into little pieces and make a huge mess. Restricting access to certain areas of the house unless completely supervised is a good idea too. Oh what fun you'll have.

Make sure he can't get under the bed. Boo got under mine as a wee pup and tore threw the bottom of the box spring and got up into it. Major pain to get her out. I found just keeping her baby gated in the room I was on (or leashed to me) was the easiest way to keep her out of trouble. Boo liked to chew our wood molding and kitchen chairs.

I should have said that myself..... I was thinking that, LOL... just like when you have a baby... have to do the same thing... go down and crawl, just like they would be doing.

Don't forget about the trash cans..... either put them up out of reach or make sure they have lids of some sorts.

Watch him ALL the time.

Seriously, we always had bully sticks and things for Buddy to chew on so he never got into destructive chewing. We also have a couple bins of toys that alternatively get switched out every couple of week so he feels like he has new toys - I think that cuts down on destructive behavior, but I don't know. And he's crated when we're gone. If he ever showed any interest in a wire or something he wasn't supposed to have, we just did the redirect attention thing to a chew or play toy and it seemed to do the trick.

Buddy loved to run under the bed when he was little and could fit. He still stick his head under there sometimes and looks back at me like "Why can't I get under there anymore?" Funny to think he doesn't have the concept of growing up. You can explain that to kids, but it must be mystifying to a dog.
