Vicious Beagles Terrorize Long Island Community

I have a hard time not laughing about this
Quote:
Long Island residents have a new menace to worry about, attack Beagles. Yes, members of the the same cute, cuddly, and lovable breed that cartoon icon Snoopy belongs to are terrorizing residents of Long Island.
While the small, short legged, brown and white dogs may be cute individually a barking snarling group of them would be enough to send most residents seeking safety indoors.

A big thank you to all the crappy BYBs out there. At least their jaw strength should be on the low end for adult dogs.

Beagles - I heard that over in the States some people get their vocal chords cut to stop them from barking - does anyone know if there is any truth in that?

i've heard of dogs having their vocal cords removed. Never known of anyone who's had it done to their dog though

They do cut the vocal cords . I have not heard it done with beagles as if you had apack of them you would want themto be able to sound as they tracked .
I know it is done many times with huskies as they are known for baking a lot for no reason. But not heard that the average pet owner does it, .
I have heard it is more for people who have a big kennels or lots of dogs like sled dogs .
I saw or should say I heard one once at a match show , it sounded like the dog had a sore throat when it tried t bark . He could still make noise just not much .

I'm not in favor of cutting their vocal cords, but I sure wish someone living near us wouldn't let their beagle run loose barking. The first time I heard it I thought someone was torturing a small child - what an awful noise!

People don't normally cut hounds vocal cords since they need to bark to work. I don't get why people have beagles and think they are just a cute family pet. They were bred to DO something.
There was just an article somewhere, I'll try to track it down, about cutting vocal cords. Apparently it is more common at dog shows. I had no idea.

My neighbour when I was a kid who used to show and breed would get his dogs debarked until it became illegal. He had Mini Foxies and they were quite noisy - especially when living in a quiet street in the middle of suburbia. He turned to racing and breeding Greyhounds later on - I never thought about it before but I wonder if it had anything to do with the ban?? Anyway, they still made a weird noise when they tried to bark.

our friends rescued a sheltie with her vocal cords cut... she tries to bark to get your attention and it is really sad to watch. She doesnt even bark excessively

It was actually the owner of a beagle that told me that and I was pretty shocked tbh. My understanding was that it was beagle pet owners [not those working the dogs] who were asking for their chords to cut, because as you say Sally the noise they make, is quite awful and sometimes relentless. I walk a beagle and it barks a lot - leaving the house, getting into my car, in the car, parking the car, getting out of the car.......it reminds of one of the wind-up toys - bark, bark, bark, but about 100 times louder.....
