When do you think it is "ok" to let the dog have the run of the house while you're gone?

LOL Ruby still doesn't have run of the house while we're out. I think it depends on the individual dog - and it's owner

Thats how I feel at the moment - I like my stuff, don't get me wrong I don't feel I'm materialistic but I don't want to have to pay to replace anything and everything is the way I like it.

I just started the second day of having them out of the crate while I rode to the produce store only 2 minutes from my house. I ran in for bananas (for the dogs) and came right back home in 10 minutes... that is 5 minutes more than I left them the other day when just riding around the block. They were looking out the window at me when I pulled in the driveway.

They were probably saying... hummmmm, she forgot to put us in the crate again, what's up with that? LOL.

I hope someday to be able to leave them out all the time when gone. I know it will take a long time, but I figured they haven't taken anything to chew in a very long time, so maybe now it is time to start the training of leaving them out of the crate for very short periods and work our way up.

I started leaving mine out at about a year old. They only have the run of the upstairs and all the doors to the bedrooms and bath are closed. They get the kitchen, living room and dining room. We puppy proof the house every morning though. They have a thing for coasters. We find them shredded if we leave them out. We once left the bathroom door open and Gunner found the roll of tp and drug it through the house. When it would break off, he would run in and grab more and run through the house. It looked like the inside of our house was tp'd not the outside.

I make sure to try to puppy proof the house before I leave them too, even if just for that little time. Even though Rex hasn't gone for TV remotes in about a year now, if left alone, I don't know if he might go back to them or not. I also keep all the extra doors closed so they are confined, if you can called all this space confined, LOL... the Living Room, Dining room, kitchen and family room, LOL.

I also failed to mention that we seldom leave peaches at home alone...with three little ones around my wife doesn't stray to far... If we were both working I woudl probably have a different opinion...
