I just checked out the breed standards. Noticed that they have not changed to include undocked tails . Can anyone tell me the latest news on the Dock Crop Dew claw ban going around Canada. From what I've read it may be coming to Ontario next. IS this true.

The Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association is forbidding its members from doing surgeries that alter an animal's appearance solely for cosmetic purposes.

From reading this article it does seem that they are moving towards Quebec and Ontario.

Does anyone know anymore about this.?

I checked out the petition does not exactly say where or when the next target is.
I left my name to show my support. I do believe that everyone should have a choice to chose a dock or cropped pet. What concerned me the most was that I have never heard and news about this in Ontario. If it was not for doing research on the web I never thought it was going on.
So here I am at the forum trying to find out whats going on.

Default NSVMA Ruling

I just found this on the web and thought I would share it with you.

States "No member of the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association shall perform cosmetic surgery on an animal for the purpose of having the animal's appearance conform to a breed standard ot tradition. Cosmetic surgery is defined as non-therapeutic surgical procedures, which alter the appearance of an animal for purely cosmetic purposes. Surgeries due to injury of for reasons of health are not considered to be cosmetic surgery.

Examples of cosmetic procedures include:

Tail docking in the equine species,
tail docking in the bovine species,
tail docking in the canine species,
tail docking in newborn puppies,
dewclaw removal in newborn puppies,
tail alteration (nicking/setting) in the equine species,
ear cropping,
and onychectomy (dewclaw) in species other than the domestic cat.

This legislative amendment will come into effect on April 1, 2010 with a 6 month implementation period. Therefore, members wil be given until October 1, 2010 to implement the education period of the Legislation, after which time the Legislative amendment will be deemed to be enforceable."

I find it hard to believe that dew claw removal in canines is classified as cosmetic. But at the same time cat de clawing is not considered cosmetic. What is cat de clawing does it have any benefits other than saving someones furniture. I know breeders remove dew claws to prevent injuries wither it be to themselves or others through acts of play or agility.

Default Lets keep our breed standards

Target:
Veterinarian Medical Associations & members of Parliament
Our Human Rights

We would like you to help in reserving the right to preserve our historic heritage in canine breeds that either requires docking, cropping or dew claw removal as a part of their standards or function. Also in keeping our rights as individuals to have these procedures done by a Certified Veterinarian in safe, sanitary conditions, as well as the rights of the individual Vets that wish to continue to offer these services.

We the undersigned are outraged by the actions of the Canadian Veterinarian Medical Association in removing our human rights and freedom of choice. Docking, cropping & dewclaw removal is good husbandry! (Care, welfare and safety for their chosen Breed.)

Our Story_____________________________________

Stop the Veterinarian Medical Association in furthering the ban on Cosmetic surgeries

On April 01, 2010, the CVMA successfully banned Docking Cropping and Dew Claw removal in New Brunswick, P.E.I. and in Nova Scotia. Despite the evidence that had been brought forth to them that D/C/DW are of benefit, in health and function and are not just cosmetic.

Here are a few of the links that give evidence in refuting their claim regarding cosmetic surgeries.

Letters from owners of tail damaged dogs Why Canines are docked

http://www.k9alliance.com/resources/...-FactSheet.pdf Why Canine breeds are docked

There are many more articles out there speaking on behalf of D/C/DW as being of beneficial and necessary to the working Animal. These bans tend to affect the working Canines of the world.

Research results: many tail problems in canines, resulting in a make shift harness or tail amputation. Make shift harness meaning, harness made by owners in aid to help canines from furthering the damage to their tails.

Field dogs unable to continue tracking in the brush without injury or great blood loss from tail injuries.

And the largest devastation the results of births for the working dog, up an 80% decline in recent births! That right these bans are causing the extinction of various Canine working breeds.

We feel this ban was put into effect under pressure from various animal activist groups. The crop/dock veterinarian ban is a misplaced act of animal welfare. We believe that the opinions and information supplied to the general public was biased and not the total truth.

Is it to be that canines will no longer take part in future careers? A guard dog can't continue to guard if it no longer can continue to offer the same function as prior to the Ban.

Our Problem________________________________

This ban removes the rights already in place by owners, breeders, admirers and of course veterinarians that wish to continue to offer these procedures within canine species. The effects of these bans in other countries have resulted in injuries, infection, and the depletion of various Canine Species. The feline species has been omitted from the cosmetic clause, and in result cat de-clawing is not considered cosmetic.

We are concerned that because it is not a provincial law but only a ban within the veterinary Association, people will be trying to do it themselves, with little or no regard to the possible consequences. Just think of the unsanitary conditions, lack of knowledge & improper equipment that they may use. The outcome could leave these animals with years of unspeakable pain & suffering, possibly leading to unnecessary death.

We have a big battle ahead of us, to fight for the justice within our human rights. Since these bans took place tragedy is slowly emerging, we have taken steps to document our arguments against the CVMA. While collecting data and statements from every bit of research ever done on Docking Cropping or Dew Claw removal.

We are a small divided group that needs to ban together and fight the Canadian Veterinarian Medical Associations. If we ban together our numbers will become much larger, increasing our chances of being heard.

Our Goal___________________________

We hope to increase awareness and educate the CVMA on what ethical treatment of animals really means. We need to ensure that the county sees that Docking, Cropping and Dew claw removal is of great importance to the livestock trade and the working dog.

To do this, we need your signature in helping make our case against the CVMA. We do not want to benefit from this financially in any way; we just want to uphold our current standards and be able to have the option of employing a Certified Vet to do these surgeries when called for. Since the ban has been released, we have heard several stories in both supports of and against. Because of the costs associated with advertising our case against the CVMA, many pet owners or breeders in similar situations have remained silent, without the financial means to do anything about it.

We want justice for our rights being taken away as individuals, to stand up for what we believe in. As members of the community that pay for vaccines, health testing and treatment. we need to stand up for what is right against people who abuse their positions of authority and send a message that they cannot remove our rights to seek appropriate care and dominate us into changing our standards to what they think they should be. We know we are the little guy, and that the CVMA has bigger pockets than we do, but with your help, we can tell our story and bring education to the public on why it is necessary to have veterinarians be allowed to continue to offer these surgeries and help save the historical heritage and interests of welfare in each and every breed.

We appreciate your support, and could not do it without you.

What option does a dog have in having to have its tail removed or ears cosmetically altered? Is it likely that a dog would wish cosmetic docking/cropping to be performed on it? It is not a human right to maim or mutilate an animal for self gratification.
So many countries have now banned these practices that those who have not seem very much behind the times. At least the Canadian Veterinary profession are beginning to march with the times whereas legislation can be a drawn out process.
This issue always causes an outrage amongst (show) breeders. In the countries where bans are in place and have been for at least 2 years people now look upon docked tails as very abnormal. As showing with docked tails is also being prohibited at many world shows it consequently makes it more difficult for breeders who believe they have quality docked dogs to enter.

I just thought others would like to read what other boxer people think of this CVMA ban.
I am „just“a boxer owner. I don’t show but I do work my boxer.

I am not quite sure what you mean when you say the breed standards are put in place for the “welfare” of the breed concerned? I'm saying that we have always bred our breed to the standards with all welfare interests of the breed concerned. Through health testing we are able to work on cardio and other breed related health problems. with docking and cropping we also have the future welfare of the animal in mind. Docking tails at a young age to me out ways any tail amputation at an older age, not saying that evey tail thats left undock is going to suffer an amputation but if its even a possibility "I chose to dock". Some dogs just never recover fully after tail is amputated at a later age. This I'm sure of that CVMA has recorded of but I don't see those satistics being published. Cropping ears help a lot of breeds in prevention of ear infections, After all the number one insurance claims in canines is ear infections. according to the DMV mag. feb 2010. And here I will say again that all uncropped ears will get ear infections, if there's a chance that i can help prevent my dogs from getting ear infections seeing it being the number 1 ailment in Canine's than I chose to crop with the welfare of their future interests.

My choice not to buy a docked or cropped dog is purely ethical; it always has been and will always remain that way. I believe that your issue has nothing to do with the welfare of the dog; it is purely a personal issue. I am convinced that no matter how long it takes, that docking and cropping will be banned completely in the US and Canada.
I'm sorry for your ethical thinking, its thoughts like these that make this a personal issue. I took the time to go to your boxer club and translate most of the information. Took sometime but I was willing to read what was available. I never found any information on docking tails by a veterinarian has lead to pain and suffering. I know as a good breeder that a unknowable person could however be responsible for this. I have read about dogs with tail damage from people seeking help on forums to cope with reoccurring tail damage from just being a happy go lucky pet.
I hope someone sees the light switch and turns it on so all can really see!!
