Hits close to home for me also. The only thing I can say is that as stories like these get more publicity, parents and caretakers will be more cautious with babies around dogs. No matter what the breed, dogs can switch to a prey instinct. We got a baby prep lesson from the trainer, and they said that dogs often see babies as non human b/c think about it - they don't walk, talk, etc. Not saying all dogs will do this, but you have to have it in your mind that they will. Our trainers even said not to let the dog in the baby's room... didn't last, but we never leave the dog around the baby unattended, no matter what.
