Question question for the breeders?

I have my name in for a pup and I would really like to know how you decide who the pups gos to? The breeder has two upcoming and I'm not sure how it is decided on who gets what! And when do they notify you that you get one and do you have to take the one you are chosen for or can you hold out for the one you feel is right for you?

Most breeders that breed for themselves, showing, obedience, etc. will test the pups and evaluate them at about 7 weeks of age, it would be at that point the breeder would keep his/hers/ or one for the stud service, and divide them by show/pet and most breeders place show dogs under contract to make certain the dogs get shown. As far as selection. You should trust your breeder to offer you one or two and maybe have you decide, but don't be surprised if they do the deciding for you. You MUST put trust in the breeder and then all will work out. Once the pups are evaluated, it would be at that time the breeder would be able to offer you the puppy. I hope this helps a bit...

helps a bit thanx!

But what happens if I feel that it isn't the right dog for me? I don't want to offend the breeder or anyone for the matter. What happens when the breeder has more buyers than pups? How do they then deicide? Show first, then pet?

How could you know that the pup is right?

Unless you are willing to own a show dog, the show dogs are separated and then the pets are offered, the pets may have character traits that wouldn't suit you, ie; higher energy level, or if you were looking for an obedience prospect, only certain dogs have the traits for high obedience.

Once again, people need to put their confidence into the breeder and if they don't feel it's a good match, then say so and go onto another breeder...

You can tell when they are so young about their obedience capabilities?

Marylou,

I sorry I offended you but I'm new to this whole buying from a breeder I usually get a dog from friends or pet shop. And now knowing about the BYB I will never buy one from there again!!! I am looking for a companion but I am also thinking about shows for this dog.

I guess it comes down to patience and I really don't have any when it comes to something I want.

Oh, you did NOT offend me, I just want you to see it from a breeders perspective. many times there are one or two dogs to choose from, but in most cases, we must allow the breeder to help or make that decision for us.
If you truly would consider showing, then hopefully the breeder would help you with that. Showing is a fun sport, you must be a good looser though, cause there are so many dogs and only one can win, ever dog does have their day :0)

Good luck in your endeavor, please keep us up to date on everything...

We PAT {Puppy Aptitude Test} test our pups at 7 weeks and it really works, also the pups that have great eye contact and sit quick and straight are also a plus...
