It is being reported that scientists have found a genetic trait in the wolf that might have actually been inherited from
dogs. They say that the Gray wolf, which in North America has a somewhat darker coat than on other continents may have this darker coat due to a genetic trait in dogs that was passed to the wolf upon mating.
The study was conducted by researchers from Stanford University and the University of Calgary. Researchers believe that the dogs of earliest Native Americans or of European immigrants may have had this genetic variant and when they mated with wild wolves, it was passed on to them resulting in what we see today in North America.
"Although it happened by accident, black wolves are the first example of wolves being genetically-engineered by people," said study co-author Marco Musiani, who also believes that all dogs in North America are direct descendants from European dogs.
