moles or warts?
To remove this ad please Register
Ok, so Bosco started getting these pink mole looking things growning unde his hanging down lips (we call them chaws, made it up, sounds like jaws). Anyway, we took him to the vet and she said not to worry, it's a virus give it a month or so and they'll go away, no need for medicine. Well it's been a few weeks, they are a big larger and some are turning black. His daycare supervisor (yes, he goes to day care a few time a week) has a boxer and she called it the 'wart virus' and said they'd just fall off in 4-6 weeks, something similar to chicken pox in kids. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm thinking I'll give it just one more week, head back to the vet and demand some medicine to get rid of this!

Well, I sure hope those people know what they are talking about! I've never heard of it. Can you post pics of it?

i'll try to take a pic and see if I can load it on here later. But they look like pinkish fleshy little balls, smaller than a marble, larger than BB gun bullet.....

Wow-Talk about timely!
Wally was just diagnosed on Wednesday as having a viral papilloma up next to his eye. Our day-care noticed it on Monday, and we had been talking about it over the weekend. His was a small bump almost like the beginning of a sty for several months, and then just over the past week or two it blossomed until it looks like he has this huge barnacle by his eye. It is VERY CONTAGEOUS, so no daycare, dog park, etc until it's gone. (although the info I read on the Net said it is not transferrable to people or older dogs--the reason it should disappear in a few months is because the puppy's immune system matures and basically forces it out.)
Our vet gave us 3 options: 1) Wait a few months and it should go away on it's own. 2) Surgery to remove it--which might be freezing it, or surgically removing. 3) A fairly new treatment that has gotten good reviews--Azithromycin. So, we started him on that last night ($95 for a 14 day supply-OUCH!) It's supposed to cause the wart to just disappear in 10-14 days. Then if that doesn't work, we're going to have it removed.
It sounds like Bosco's is a tough case, you might need to do the surgery route.
you might want to check out this link:

Good Luck--I'll report back on how the medication works on Wally.

I read that link and yes, the pictures in the mouth look just like what Bosco has. I guess they'll go away.

Wally's wart is GONE!
Wally Update-
Azithromycin Works! As the time from diagnosis has passed (7/22/09), the wart just sort of deflated. It looked like an old balloon. Last night I was doing the 'squeeze thing' on it (one of the websites I reviewed said there was some thought that squeezing lightly might 'kick start' the immune system), and just as I was letting go, he jerked his head and it popped right off! He has a little bloody spot there, so I put some hydrogen peroxide on it, but it looks really good. HURRAH-we will give him 2 more days of Azithromycin to finish off the prescription, and then it's back to day care! (and not a moment too soon-he's been a maniac. Not only no daycare, but we had 10 straight days of 90-106 degree heat (unusual for Portland OR) so it was too hot to do anything.)
If I could figure out how to include photos, I'd would, but it keeps fighting with me! (HOW do you add photos? I have them in my computer, but can't get them to cross over.)
Anyway. Promised an update, and happily it is a positive one!
