Cipro poo - help!
To remove this ad please Register
Got a complication on my transition to Raw I'm hoping you can help with. Buddy got an upper respiratory infection (kennel cough) at the dog park last week. When he started getting a greenish yellow discharge from his eye I panicked and let the vet put him on cipro. Hate that antibiotic.
After about 5 days on it his appetite was poor and he was getting really loose stools, even on probiotics. Not a big surprise, I figured his stomach probably felt like a meat grinder. That was Tues & Wed of this week. So yesterday am (before he had his chicken) he had liquidy stool - so it's not because of the chicken.
But now he's got it bad - real liquid that comes on him so fast he's gone in the house. I'm wondering if I should back off on the chicken and just give him rice and pumpkin until this clears up or only give him one quarter a day and rice the rest, or what? What do you guys think. I am still giving him probiotics of course.

I swear by cooked chicken and rice when they have the runs. If it's so bad he can't control it get him on the cooked chicken and rice with a spoon of pumpkin until his tummy settles. I haven't had to deal with an already upset tummy during a transition to raw so I am a little hesitant to say just keep going with the raw - the only thing I can think of if you really want to keep up with the raw is to feed him chicken frames which has a much higher bone to meat ratio as bone usually keeps stools firm, and see if that improves it - but I can't promise it will. Someone else may of had to deal with something similar and have better advice. Poor little guy, his body is taking a beating at the moment . Hope he feels better soon.

I'll cook up his chicken then, and make some rice. He feels really good when he's not getting a cramp. He'll go from playing to suddenly a whimper and then - here it comes. It got really bad this morning. Poor baby.

I got the impression it was pretty bad from your post - whimpering poor little man. If he was more adjusted to raw I would prob say stick with it, but as there is a chance the raw will affect his poop because he is just in the first stage of transition I wouldn't want to add to what he is already going through. Has he finished the cipro yet?

I too would switch to the chicken and rice with pumpkin, just to give his stomach a little rest . Sometimes it is a few days on the meds before you will see any reactions . Hopefully it will pass soon and he feels better .

Yes, that was done Wed. I really hate Cipro, even more than other antibiotics. I wish I had more experience and knowledge in natural remedies for pets. I've studied it more in humans, but I'm learning there's a lot of crossover. I just don't want to make assumptions. But looking back on it, I think the cure was worse than the illness and he would have come out fine - better in fact, because his own immune response wouldn't have been cut short - if I would have stayed with the natural remedies I was using.
I'm glad he's done with it anyway. Now we just have to get him over this. It probably was a real jolt to take an already stressed GI system and then change his food. But like I said, he's really happy and healthy if he's not crampy.

I assume it would be like humans and it will be in his system for a few days after he finishes the meds. Should be back to normal soon .

I'm with the others on boiled chix and rice and a bit of pumpkin. I hope he's feeling much better soon!

"Thanks for all your advice. I have cooked his chicken and will give it to him (without bones) along with the rice & pumpkin for his next meal later today.
I took him to my brothers this morning - after he was done with his cramps - and he was fine. Ran and played for two hours! That made me feel good. I swear I worry more about him than I do myself! He's just so sweet!

How was the poor little guy today? Is his poop starting to thicken up?
