Default Seasonal Allergies

Something in Iowa is blooming and it is not doing Scout any favors. For the last few days she's been waking up with goop all around her eyes and sometimes it gets so bad that her eye is actually covered in a film. She's also been doing typical paw licking, scratching, and rubbing her eyes (which is the saddest thing I've ever seen!)

We get into the vet yesterday and he said that he has seen record numbers of canine seasonal allergies - so it's a bumper crop of whatever it is that's bugging her. The treatment is more frequent baths, a daily 25mg Bendadryl, and two drops of Falcon eye drops twice daily. I'll let you know how it goes. Has anyone else dealt with seasonal allergies in their pup?

Yeah, when we went in the vet just rattled off all of Scout's symptoms and immediately had a solution in mind. I guess he's just been overrun with dog allergies. We're only a couple days into the treatment but she already seems to be doing better. The eye drops are really effective. The redness and swelling went right down. She still has some eye goop but it's not nearly as bad.

We're in Iowa City, Iowa. The city flooded last year and some are speculating that the flood had something to do with how bad the allergies are this year. If that's it I suppose it would be mold due to higher moisture or some plant is thriving off the previous year's high waters. Who knows - could be anything! It's actually been unseasonably cool for the last several weeks and it could be that a plant which doesn't usually pollinate this much is benefiting from the cooler temps.

Sweet Boo had terrible allergies last spring and summer. She was a mess, benedryl did nothing for her. Just when we were thinking about another med the allergies subsided. That was her first summer, this year we didn't even notice any allergies, s hopefully Scout will outgrow her allergies also.

If you can check your local weather on line they should have a section on pollen report. I live in Southern ontario and for the last 4 days MOLD has been really high here they say it is this type of mold CLADOSPORIUM. There are a few weeds that are moderate but they say mold is very high right now.
