Memos' trip to the holistic vet...
To remove this ad please Register
Today was exciting...finally got Memo to my breeders holistic vet. It was determined he has a food allergy. Last 2 wks especially has been bad with his head shaking, scratching the ears to the point where alot of the hair is missing. He is taking drops for the inflamation in his ears and we are going to begin the process of food elimination...and i have to figure out where to buy cheap deer/bison/caribou LOL ...if anyone in Ontario knows where i can get it, please let me know!! Has anyone's dog had allergies to fish, fish oil, garlic & brewers yeast? i don't know why...but i have a feeling he may be allergic to one of these bc that is when he seems to itch more. I know it will prob take mths to figure out the culprit but wish me luck! these babies worry us tooooo much LOL

Did your vet do muscle testing?
Hopefully you'll have some answers soon. He can't do chicken, turkey, beef or lamb?

No muscle testing.
His main meal is chicken or fish...i will have him solely on chicken/chicken organs for the next few mths and see how it goes.
I was occasionally feeding him turkey, beef & pork. Organ meat i switch up usually every day...i use bf heart, bf kidney, chicken gizzards/liver & calf liver.
Andrea these are what i supplement meals with: B12 (50mcg), ACV, Oil oregano, Mega acidopholus, fish oil (am removing). The vet did mention to start adding some green veggies...but no carrots. I'm also removing yogourt in case he's developed allergy to dairy.

Last night at the seminar the vet said kale (I believe it was) is a really great green veggie.
She also said muscle testing is really easy to do. I haven't looked into it since Keepers allergies were so easy to deal with, but maybe it's worth a shot?
Final random holistic tid bit that I had no idea about... white dogs react really badly to citrus. Isn't that strange? She uses a citrus flea/bug spray in the summer but says NEVER to put it on a while dog.

thank you so much for the citrus tip! I spray ACV on the dogs for fleas in the summer.
I will get some Kale! i've used swiss chard & spinach in the past...and the vet recommended squash.

Good luck with the visit to the holistic vet. I'm curious of anything you learn too. Buddy's going to one in December - just for a check up. But I'm hoping to learn from the visit.
Allergies can be tricky. I hope you can find a way to strengthen the immune system to deal with it instead of elimination, although I know that's often necessary. It looks like you've already got him on a lot of good stuff! Our dogs eat better than most kids!
Keep us posted.

Oh dear another allergy baby, hope you have luck sorting it out. You were asking about cheap game meat....do you have National Parks (we call them that, protected natural areas) near you, some of them do an annual culling to keep animal numbers under control you could enquire if they do it and what happens to the animals - just an idea, over here they often cull kangaroos off farms and some areas of national parks. The other one is to find hunting/shooting clubs and put notices up on their boards or adds in hunting publications....again not sure if these are available where you are but over here due to our gun laws you have to be a member of a club/association and most have a magazine, newspaper or newsletter that they distribute.
Hope it all goes well for him - and you.

I am also sooo excited to say that memos breeder has found me a deer meat supplier about 45mins from me...we'll prob be going there together Monday...it's $2/LB!!! they also sell Bison and duck..at about $4/lb.
I also have a hunter friend who's promised me some deer meat...but hasn't gotten back to me yet. I've called the mennonites...too expensive, $6/lb.

I wish I could send some to all the allergy fur babies - kangaroo meat is supposed to be fantastic for dogs with food allergies

There may be a lot of hype about Conjugated Linoleic Acid or CLA but what is it really? CLA is a form of omega-6 fatty acid and can be found in kangaroo and dairy products. It is abundant in the meat and bone of ruminant grazing animals – about 3 to 5 times more than animals fattened on grains. Even though it is not a ruminant animal, research has shown that kangaroo has up to 5 times the level of CLA as compared to other meats. Kangaroo meat has always been used in Australia as a form of pet food and is now gaining wider recognition in the global market.
How does CLA benefit my dog?
1. CLA supports important body functions for overall health and fitness
• Better immune system
CLA can enhance immune response from the body and provide greater overall resistance. CLA may also inhibit the growth of cell-related diseases, which involves the mutation of normal living cells. For example, the presence of CLA could slow the growth of cancer cells or help them destroy themselves.
• Reduction of inflammation
Inflammation occurs because it is the body’s way of responding to an infection or irritation. The presence of CLA in kangaroo may be able to help reduce inflammation by responding quicker to any foreign attack. A reduction in the risk of inflammation means the risk of developing allergies is also lesser – a perfect alternative for allergic dogs. Kangaroo is also less likely to cause a reaction in your pet’s body, as it is a novel protein. Dogs develop allergies to those foods that are most frequently fed. Hence feeding new protein sources would lower the chances of him/her developing any adverse reaction.
2. CLA enhances the building of lean muscles
• More lean muscles, lower fat percentage
Lean muscles are known to burn more calories than fat. Hence with CLA, your pet may stay leaner and will be more capable of burning any excess energy. A leaner body mass also means a lower fat percentage and a healthy weight, resulting in lower possibilities of contracting heart-related illness like coronary heart disease.
• A form of novel protein which is ideal for lowering the risk of developing allergies
• Low fat content (40% of the fat in kangaroo meat consists of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) molecules)
• An excellent source of CLA (promotes anti-inflammatory properties and enhances immunity)

it's also FREE RANGE and ORGANIC!
