It's a ripoff. I considered it when I got Lucky. I found it more beneficial to set aside money in case of an emergency rather than pay for insurance. Most insurances don't cover prescriptions either.

INsurance won't pay for the problems that are prone to the breed. So tumors and cancer will NOT be covered for boxers. We looked into getting insurance, but when we found this out, we said no.

Gosh, very different over here then - our insurance covers both dogs for anything - breed related or otherwise, provided it wasn't a problem we were aware of when we took out the insurance - eg, it wasn't a pre-exisiting condition. All Ruby's heart tests were covered and Jakey's allergies too. Personally I wouldn't be without insurance. You just never know what the future holds - specialist tests and consultations can all add up to an absolutely horrendous amount.

I looked into it and over here everything is covered (some covers even give you a "bonus" each year that you can use towards heartworm/flea/tick preventatives, yearly shots, prescription foods, teeth cleaning, alternative therapies, behavioral therapy, obedience training etc) but some insurance companies require certain breeds pay a little extra sort of like a surcharge (Boxer is one of them) I think it was only $5 or $10 more though. Dogs over a certain age are not eligible for cover (I'd ask about that because Tie would not be able to get cover over here) and pre existing conditions are not covered. I didn't get it as I don't really need to but I do think if you can get the types of cover we can get it is a must have if you're not in a position to cover a few thousand worth of vet bills with little notice. Actually some even offer the option of money (it was like between $1000 and $2000) towards a new pet (should yours pass away) on their "Gold" or "Premium" policies. It is pretty pricey though, if I recall correctly the highest level of cover is approx $50 per month - it worked out more than what I would pay per person for our health insurance.

Well you guys are lucky. I guess pet insurance here just follows along with all insurances here in New Jersey. We are known for having the highest insurances of the states.

I looked into it when we got Wally, and for decent coverage, it was just prohibitively expensive. $50-$70 a month is indeed more than we pay for ourselves! Of course, if we had know then what a bruiser Wally was going to become--with little or no regard to personal safety---we might have reconsidered! Maybe with our new health-care reform, we can add him as a dependent?

Most insurances have loopholes and consider just about any condition to be genetic .

It seems so much better to just put away whatever you would pay to an insuracnce company into savings account to be used for only pet health or emergencies.
