Wait A Year To Get Newman Fixed?
To remove this ad please Register
I've heard from several people that it's good to wait a year to get your dog fixed so he has enough time to properly grow and mature.
Is there any truth in this?

I suggest at least one year. They need hormones to grow and develop bone and muscle...

His size will be stunted and there will be more risk of orthopedic and problems as he develops. I don't mean to bash Vets, but they do it out of convenience (smaller dog, less anesthesia, etc) also now a days, they make people feel like bad dog owners if you don't fix your dogs, what about us people that show and breed? If you are a responsible dog owner, having a dog neutered or spayed should be YOUR call, not people or society telling us to.
It is also a bad thing that daycare dog parks, and some obedience classes won't allow un-altered dogs

If I had a male pup I would wait 12-18 months, for all the reasons listed above. There's no hurry. Just be a responsible pet owner in the meantime.

Does the same orthopedic go along with females? Stunted growth?

Buddy was neutered at 4 months which, as I've written before, I was under the impression was okay at the time. But since then I've heard it can cause problems. So far everything's been fine. I'm not sure at what point problems show up, if they're going to occur.

Thank you ron for starting this thread, when to neuter a puppy didn't even cross my mind, I would have never thought about anything mentioned in this thread. Also thank you all for sharing your knowlege on the subject, you saved me from making a mistake.
