How often do you guys find yourselves cleaning the dogs ears?

I cleaned Charlies right one the day after we got him as it was looking a bit yucky, today i had to clean the left one for the same reason. Not an easy job to do and the stuff that comes out of it is a bit...

Ahhhhh the joys of dogs.

I have only had to clean Ruby's ears a couple of times, but our Cav's ears need regular cleaning as they are prone to problems, we use a product called PAW Gentle Ear Cleaner it doesn't contain harsh chemicals, alcohol or acid like other cleaners on the market which can sting the dog if there is a bit of tissue damage and cause them to become ear shy which is especially bad with Cavs because you need to be able to clean and groom their ears. It says it is a blend of citrus oils, you basically drip it into their ear fold their ear down and masage it, which loosens any dirt, you then wipe away any excess and loose dirt with a tissue (any that is left in the ear is harmless and will evaporate, so I was told by my vet) it says to use weekly but we find two weekly is fine.

I don't like to fool with too much cleaning if not necessary. I haven't cleaned either one of my dogs ears yet. I do have the cleanser sitting out, waiting for me to do it. And I wouldn't do any deep cleaning either.

Do dogs have ear wax as humans do and it would be a sort of protectant. That is why I am leery about cleaning them. I always only cleaned the part of ear that I can see, not going down in deep.

Neither of mine look dirty or smell, so that is why I don't like to mess with them.

I dont do deep cleaning, thats for the vet to do. Charlie did have wax that was coming into the outter fold of the ear and in the little crevices in the ear cannal entrance. Those are the areas ive cleaned.

I just used cotton wool and warm water and did it at the same time as I washed his eyes with the tear remover I was given by the breeder.

i have not had to clean bo's ears at all yet, weve had him for just over 3 months. they are still extremely clean, not even a hint of wax at all. im not really sure what even causes a dogs ears to get waxy faster then other dogs. maybe weather or something like that.

This is one of the reasons we chose a boxer... no brushing... no hair cuts no ear cleaning no eyedrops no nosecleaning. Just a trimming on the nails and we choose to trim peaches whiskers.
