Do you use heartworm meds year round?

We only give our dogs hw meds April-December. The medicine in the pills is really simply a poison, so I can't imagine giving it to my dogs more than necessary (we obviously live somewhere with cold winters). The counter argument is that if the dog is on hw meds year round and does develop heartworm, the manufacturer of the drugs will pay for the treatment.

We do yearly heartworm tests every spring also.

No I use Sentinal, which is a flea, tick hearworm med. I only use it in the spring, summer and early fall.

We use Sentinal also... although I'm worried Boo will need a different med this year, because it made her vomit a few times before. After she vomited the vet had me give her another dose, that made me very uncomfortable because I didn't know if she had vomited up the entire dose or not.

I like that Sentinal provides flea protection because I do not use topical flea meds on my animals.

yeah i'm all about avoiding the topical stuff too. We use to give advantage to our pets, which i never liked. Just seemed odd that you put a chemical on the back of your pets neck and it offers 30 days of protection
