Default Does Your Dog Have Stinky Anal glands?

Once a month or so, Tie's anal glands produce a horrible smell. Normally they empty just fine, but every once-and-awhile....man!!!

Does your pup have a stinky bum sometimes?

Keepers has expressed his on the couch once. Ew. I was worried it would be a frequent thing with him, because of his other digestive issues but we've only had a problem that one time.

Yes and its horrible. I have not had his glands emptied by the vet yet b/c right when I get at my wits end it some how goes away. What is that about and is there anyway to prevent it?

Most dogs -- most of the time -- dont have a problem expressing their glands. But sometimes they need to expressed manually either by your vet, or you

Once you start doing it at a vet you will likely need to continue it forever, something I don't want to commit to. Some people say adding a little extra fiber to the diet can help the glands express better when the dog is going to the bathroom. I give mine plain canned pumpkin from time to time.

Oh Boy--
With Wally's screw tail from his Bulldog momma, I already have to wipe his bum to keep from having those "What's that SMELL??" moments. Now I have to watch out for this? Ick! Our lab/corgi mix that we lost last Nov used to do this spinning thing on the carpet which would trigger a trip to the groomer or vet to have the glands expressed--so have never actually seen what it consists of. (I'm thinking I really don't want to!) But--how will we know if he needs them cleared--before he slimes the couch?
