Unhappy My girl was spayed on friday

She has had a hard time. They wanted to keep her overnight Friday because she kept licking and causing herself to bleed. my husband didnt want her stay overnight so the vet wrapped her really good so she couldnt lick the wound. My husband took her back Saturday morning to get checked and re-wrapped and she was bleeding only a little. She keeps throwing up, she has managed to keep some rice and some pieces of chicken down. they dosed her up with pain meds on friday too, but i could/can tell she is very uncomfotable. And we have to leash walk her for a week, and she is not liking that too much. i actually laid on the floor with her for like 2 hrs friday night. then saturday she couldnt get comfortable unless she was on our bed. but everytime i would get up, she wanted to jump off which wasnt good. so needless to say i spent most of my saturday on my bed in my pjs watching movies with xena. which was okay because i wasnt feeling well myself really. oh and when they had her there asleep they did an xray on her because ever since we got her (she was 1 when we got her from someone that my husband's sister knew) she has had a limp and she raises her back leg alot when she is standing or running. we think that the people who had her may have abused her. she has had a partially torn ACL muscle in her knee, and the signs of hip displaysia and something is wrong with one of her vertebrae in her back. the dr said the knee is the first thing we should get fixed, and its $1500 for the surgery. uugghhh As far as her vertebrae, they said if she is not crying or yelping in pain, then we dont really need to do anything with that. but they recommended giving her glucosomine which they said would help some with these issues. My husband had to take her back this morning and leave her to be checked again. My poor baby.

**UPDATE** Just spoke with the vet, she is good to go. He said she looks good today, and they removed the wrapping, and put the soft material collar on her. Hooray! Hopefully she will be able to keep her food down easier as the days go on!

Hopefully she will continue to improve! Did you get her from a rescue? Can they help with any of the medical costs?

Sorry to hear she is having a hard time with healing .

ACL injuries are very common in active dogs .This gives some alternative treatments to try instead of surgery .

I have an 8 month old Boxer. She absolutely loves to eat branches & sticks when she is outside. I have a large fenced in back yard great for exercising, however, she eats sticks and then throws up. When will she stop chewing? I give her plenty of tendons & toys to chew on and I hate to keep her from being outside alone so I can keep her from not eating sticks. Puppies!

By the way, I had her spayed in December and she did well. No problems with throwing up or healing. I assume its like everything else, most do well, some have side effects.

Xena is doing very well this morning. Her incision (sp?) site looks good and healing. We started mixing her regular food with the rice/chicken we have been giving her-and she hasnt thrown up since yesterday morning. She also ate at the vets office. We are still leash walking her. Her collar they sent for her to wear is SO funny, as they are usually that clear stiff plastic. My husband walked in the door last night, and my girl had this big blue collar with white piping on. lol Her little brown face in the middle made her look like a big blue flower! lol Its not the hard plastic, but a soft vinyl type material. I like it much better than the standard clear plastic. Anyhow, she is trying to be her bouncy self, and she is doing much much better. She goes back either this Friday or Monday to get the stitches out.

BTW, I did not get her from a rescue. My husband's sister told us of a person who was trying to find a home for their boxer because she was "too wild" and her husband did not like her. She was a year old at the time. And obviously they had never had boxers before. We drove three hours, and found her tied to a doghouse outside on a lead no more than 4-5ft. Her hair around where the collar was and behind her ears was almost gone. It broke my heart. We immediately took her home. We took her to the vet and he said she had the worst case of worms he had ever seen in a dog. She was limping at that time, but the vet said it would be best to xray when we had her spayed. She doesnt cry with it or appear to be in pain. She just lifts it sometimes when she is running. We hope to get it fixed soon, but the surgery will be about $1500. I believe the other people abused and neglected her, by what i saw there and by what the vet said. A year before, we had to put down our 6 year old brindle boxer Sassy due to intestinal cancer. It was the hardest thing my husband and I had to do. Xena looks similar to Sassy, and to see her condition when we got there--I knew I had to get her away from there as soon as possible.
