It depends on what method you feed . Some suggest vedgies but others don't . It is what you feel you want to feed . I do feed vedgies and fruits but only in small amounts.

Generally it is felt fruits & vedgies are not needed but they are ok to feed .

I feed little to none. Dogs are carnivores not omnivores. The dogs are not able to 'break down' the cell walls of veggies and fruits so they cannot digest them without you manually mushing them up. I do feed green tripe, which is essentially the stomach of cows (or whatever animal) and so they do get some nutritional value from that. There is no harm in the fruits or veggies so if you want to feed it fine but you aren't depriving your dog if you don't feed it.

so with no vegetables is it like the Atkins Diet, where fat is burned as fuel and not carbohydrates?

Is the nutrition the point of it then? Just seems strange, the stomach of cows? Maybe it's just me....

Ummmmm..... I don't know anything about people nutrition. For dogs the veggies are pretty much just undigested and come out the same way they went in.

I feed sweet potatoes to Keepers. He has an amazingly hard time keeping weight on, so the potatoes really help. I also give a bit of whatever is in season from time to time.

It’s true the ‘purists, barfers’ don’t feed fruit or veg – only raw meat and bones and that’s it! In that respect, yes, it is like Atkins – only Atkins does allow some carbs in terms of limited amounts of fruit and veggies. I feed mine both veggies and fruit – both have heaps of nutrients, minerals, carbs, and vit C which is useful to eradicate ‘free radicals’ [very reactive chemical species implicated in things like cancer], although it’s interesting to note that dogs MAKE THEIR OWN VIT C – they have all the necessary enzymes to make it in their body to do this [we have some missing] - this is the argument purists use against feeding them. It is also true that it will pass through undigested unless it is pureed, blended. By pureeing the veg, it imitates what a wild dog/wolf would find in the stomach of its kill, e.g., partially digested grasses, roots etc. It’s one of the reasons why [I think] dogs eat grass so much – there’s something nutrionally in it that they need.

Any veg or fruit is fine, but NOT onions – they are toxic in dogs. Also, a little tip – mine won’t eat pureed veg by itself, but mixed in with yoghurt, they woof it down!
