We were up every hour last night with him and the runs.

So today he's only had kibble.
I'm wondering if the chicken quarters had too much fat or maybe that in combo with a GI system that was still stressed from the Cipro. Someone else told me their dog got colitis after being on an antibiotic which developed into a reaction with five raw meats! Eventually they got her back to tolerating four of them, but it took a while and using high doses of probiotics.
I think what we're going to do right now is go back to kibble for a few weeks, along with probiotics and see if we can get his gut strong again. Then introduce some raw but not chicken - maybe beef - and see how he tolerates it. Assuming it goes well, then start adding others.
This may be of use to others. This same person also showed me this link (
http://www.petplace.com/drug-library...xan/page1.aspx ) which, among other things, says:
- Young animals treated with ciprofloxacin may develop damage to the cartilage of their joints. Swollen joints and lameness are clinical signs that may be observed. This has not been shown to happen when the ear and eye formulations are used.
- Ciprofloxacin should not be administered to puppies. Those between the ages of four and 28 weeks are the most susceptible.
- Ciprofloxacin has a good safety record and adverse reactions are uncommon. Occasionally, some animals develop diarrhea or loose stools from ciprofloxacin.
Since Buddy is only a little over 7 months, it's highly questionable if he should have even been given that particular drug.
So that's probably why we've had such a rough time, compared to the others who have made this change. I just hope no permanent damage has been done and we can start to switch him to raw later on this summer.
Thanks for asking. He's doing fine - happy & playful - today - but we're all tired from being up all night! No dog naps for us!
