Default Runny Poo And Blood In Stool After Feeding RAW

To remove this ad please Register
We went back to raw with Buddy this morning. He got a quarter chicken. About 4 hours later we left for church. He'd had a loose but normal poop before we left. When we got back - What a mess! Light chicken colored poo with watery stool everywhere in his crate. He went about every 15 minutes for the next hour - sometimes with small streaks of blood. He's playful and feels good otherwise. He's settled down now (about an hour later) and hasn't had any more diarrhea - yet.

Magtie, did Tie have this after his birthday dinner? Buddy's been on a good food (Innova/Evo) so I'm sure there's some detox, but I'm really wondering if we need to change our plan here.

I really hate to abandon raw. I'm thinking of giving him only canned pumpkin today so his GI system can settle, but what about tomorrow? Do we tough it out or modify the transition? Any ideas?

No i didn't noticed any real issues with tie, but to be perfectly honest i haven't kept a close on him when he's doing his business either.

Georgie had no problem at all. She has been on the raw chicken 2 weeks and the only problem was a couple days after she started she had an upset stomach for a couple of hours. Maybe she was not well enough from his antibiotics (it was him that was sick wasn't it?).

Georgies poops are great. No smell and easy cleanup!

Maybe Buddy's problem is he was he had an upper respiratory infection and also on Cipro. So his system just isn't ready for another change. Or maybe he's just not tolerating it so well, as in KeeperBoy's thread.

I guess what I'll do is back off, go back to kibble puppy food and try blending in some cooked or maybe raw with it and see if we can get his system stabilized.

Apparently a small amount of blood in the stool during detox is not that uncommon (I've never had any, but have heard of others who have). You can give him his chicken with the skin removed (a small amount find it a little rich) and add a small spoon of can pumpkin to his meals. You can try him on one kibble meal and one raw meal if you're really concerned, there are many who feed that combination successfully

Prince has also had little streaks of blood in his stools also but otherwise he is doing very well.

Fantastic the runny stool during transition is not very nice but if you can get past that they do settle down rather fast. Is he enjoying it and doing well on it?
Sally, how is Buddy going today?

he loves it. I would put his kibble down and it would take him forever to eat it but he goes at the chicken as soon as its put out. Internet is still out cause of construction on our block so I will post pics and videos as soon as I can

We were up every hour last night with him and the runs. So today he's only had kibble.

I'm wondering if the chicken quarters had too much fat or maybe that in combo with a GI system that was still stressed from the Cipro. Someone else told me their dog got colitis after being on an antibiotic which developed into a reaction with five raw meats! Eventually they got her back to tolerating four of them, but it took a while and using high doses of probiotics.

I think what we're going to do right now is go back to kibble for a few weeks, along with probiotics and see if we can get his gut strong again. Then introduce some raw but not chicken - maybe beef - and see how he tolerates it. Assuming it goes well, then start adding others.

This may be of use to others. This same person also showed me this link (http://www.petplace.com/drug-library...xan/page1.aspx ) which, among other things, says:
  • Young animals treated with ciprofloxacin may develop damage to the cartilage of their joints. Swollen joints and lameness are clinical signs that may be observed. This has not been shown to happen when the ear and eye formulations are used.
  • Ciprofloxacin should not be administered to puppies. Those between the ages of four and 28 weeks are the most susceptible.
  • Ciprofloxacin has a good safety record and adverse reactions are uncommon. Occasionally, some animals develop diarrhea or loose stools from ciprofloxacin.
Since Buddy is only a little over 7 months, it's highly questionable if he should have even been given that particular drug.

So that's probably why we've had such a rough time, compared to the others who have made this change. I just hope no permanent damage has been done and we can start to switch him to raw later on this summer.

Thanks for asking. He's doing fine - happy & playful - today - but we're all tired from being up all night! No dog naps for us!
