I started Georgie on pork today. It was Country style ribs. It had quite a lot of fat which I cut off. How much fat is OK?? I felt the bone was too sharp so I cut it out and cubed the pork. I kind of wish I did not add pork because I don't think I will use it much. What about pork spare ribs? Can they eat those bones?? I am going to have to get a book so I don't have to keep asking you guys!!

No need to be sorry, better to ask IMO . I'm not sure what "country style ribs" are so can't comment on that, a little bit of fat is okay but you don't want to give alot. I was planning on trying Ruby on some pork spare ribs this month (I haven't introduced pork yet - she already has a few protein sources so I haven't been in any hurry and they have been $12.99 per kilo when I have looked at them), they manage beef ribs well so figured pork ribs would be a good inclusion.

Have you checked out the recipe section on this site? Might give you some ideas of cuts that you can include.

Pork ribs are on sale here for 99 cents per pound . The recipe section did say just give them a slab of ribs!!

I don't feed pork as much as some people. I have increased a bit lately though. I typically use roasts (and cut the big fat layers off) when I do. Last time I bought ribs because I often give beef ribs as a recreation bone. I was surprised when both girls ate the bone!!! I have given them a couple times now and they do very well with it but I still haven't figured out if they are crunching the bone or swallowing it whole? (i'm in the same area of the house, just not sitting right in front of them) It is smaller then the beef rib though so could be they chew it right up?

Tanny, I'm glad for your posts and questions! I'm looking at books from the library, but there's often disagreement so it's nice to get feedback from people who are doing it. I was wondering too about fat content and if you can give them the spare rib bones for when we start with that.

So it sounds like the consensus is you can give the rib bones and you give some fat, but if there's a lot you cut it off, right?

Yeah you want to cut the fat off if there is alot, just use how much fat is on a whole chicken as a guide, I personally wouldn't give any more fat than what would be on a chicken, especially for a newly raw fed dog or one that seems to have a sensitive stomach. Here is a link to a site I refer to, if you go down to the bottom of the page you will see photos of a Dobe called Bowie eating beef ribs, I just wanted to point out that they are very good to give but they may not be able to eat all of the bone - in which case you give them their ribs and when they are finished take away the parts of the bone they can't eat . I haven't tried pork ribs yet (they have been quite pricey) but as whitedaisy mentioned they are smaller, and when I look at the other bones Ruby can get through I don't feel she will have a problem eating all of it.

I have not fed pork ribs ( pork yes just not the ribs ) . I do know many do feed them though . I usually feed a pork shoulder -they are usually very cheap , I cut off most of the meat just leaving about 1 meals worth of meat and let her eat it . I then take away the bone after a while to give as a recreational bone a few days later .

I've fed pork rib, I've found them too boney and I have to add in organ meat with the meal. I've never had a problem with the bones being sharp though. Were the ribs individual or in a slab?

They were individual "country style" images-1.jpg The bone had a real sharp point that worried me.

Oh I think it's the shoulders that I feed??? I just buy whatever is cheap. And then I give the big bone later as a treat... gets me 2-3 hours of chewing time and very happy pups. Then I notice they are pretty thirsty so I'm guessing its a bit salty???

raw bones are pretty pliable and not as sharp as you probably think. Sometimes when I'm feeding rabbit I think those bones are sharp but then I remember that these are dogs and are meant to eat this way.
