Prep question

When you guys prep meat do you add in supplements and then freeze? Right now I portion out the meat and freeze. Once it comes out to thaw and I'm ready to serve it I add in supplements. Right now they get a bit of THK, salmon oil, vitamin E, enezymes and a few others. My issue is that I find I forget something at least 3 times a week. My biggest concern is not giving enough E with the salmon oil, I'm prone to forget the E and not the oil, which I know is bad. I know they can live without THK and such, but I'm just wondering if there is a better way to prep, so I don't forget anything.

I thought if I'm giving THK, I don't need to add vitamins or anything but the meat..... I am using the Preference one.

If you keep forgetting the Vitamin E and not the salmon oil what about getting an Omega Oil that already has the vitamin E in it.

I have a kitchen cabinet reserved for the dogs LOL...the top shelf is their morning supps (flax oil, ACV, Acidopholus & velvet pills)....the bottom shelf is the evening supps (Oil oregano & B12). Supps are on left side, all other stuff such as polysporin, hydorgen peroxide (all their booboo meds) are on the right. I know...i'm nuts LOL

Each of my two only gets about 3-4 tablespoons of THK. I feed it more as a supplement than a base mix, since I also feed meat with bone and organ in it. When I fed the normal amount of THK I didn't add much, I think I still did salmon oil though.

I don't usually mix and refreeze just because the amount thawed is what I need, but I don't think there's a problem with it.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about not giving enough E or forgetting the E and not the oil being bad? Are you saying should be given together in a certain amount? Just curious because I've not heard that.

Oh, I just read you can add 10 IU of E/gm of fish oil/kg of food. But it is in organ meat, green veggies, and various other foods so I'm not sure if you actually need to add it or not. Also, some fish oils add E to keep the oil from spoiling. Hmmm.

BELTSVILLE, MARYLAND. Fish oils are beneficial in the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease. They do, however, oxidize very easily and therefore add to the oxidant stress on the body. An experiment was recently carried out by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to see if an increased intake of vitamin E could counteract this detrimental effect of fish oils. Forty men aged 32 to 44 were involved. The men consumed a controlled diet for a total of 28 weeks. For the first 10 weeks they received placebo oil capsules (15 g/day), for the next 10 weeks they received fish oil capsules (15 g/day), and for the last 8 weeks they received the fish oil plus 200 mg of vitamin E (all-rac-alpha-tocopherol). The urinary excretion of peroxidation products (malondialdehyde) more than doubled when the fish oil capsules were introduced but then dropped by a factor of four when vitamin E was added. The vitamin E concentration in the red blood cells dropped very significantly when fish oil was ingested but more than recovered with the vitamin E supplement. It is concluded that the negative effects of fish oil consumption can be overcome by taking them together with vitamin E.
Nair, Padmanabhan P., et al. Dietary fish oil-induced changes in the distribution of alpha-tocopherol, retinol, and beta-carotene in plasma, red blood cells, and platelets: modulation by vitamin E. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 58, July 1993, pp. 98-102

I have read about the Vitamin E and was actually surprised by it....I try to feed a big variety that would include that kind of stuff rather than supplement, it would cost me a fortune to go out and buy all the different types that are recommended and I am very forgetful lol so she wouldn't actually get it as often as she should and in the end be useless. I don't actually give fish oil (I feed whole fresh fish instead) so I'm no expert but I do recall reading somewhere that the Grizly (sp?) brand claims that their oil already contains vitamin E that is found naturally in the salmon and that due to their careful production methods the Vitamin E is not harmed during the process, can't give you the source - sorry, but you could always email them and check if that is indeed true (if it would be easier for you to use an oil with Vit E already in it). Will your guys eat fresh fish?

Keepers won't get within 3 feet of a fresh fish, isn't that funny? Boo will eat anything. We're trying ground salmon in December.
