I have kids, mine aren't little anymore, but kids are always kissing the dogs right on the lips and have never been sick. If you have babies that are crawling maybe consider feeding in crate that you can close? Honestly, I'm probably not as clean about it as I should be. We feed on a rug and I wash it once a week. I do have a table where I do just the dog prep/feedings and I don't wash it daily. I don't even change my scissors or forks daily, every couple days. I've been feeding for about 2 years and never had anyone get sick. I would be cleaner if I had little kids (my youngest is 10) just because I wouldn't want to chance anything but really, it's pretty safe.

My son is 20 months...I may have to consider that...Im just afraid of him getting sick...hes not able to get away from Bella yet...and when she stands on her hind legs she reaches his face quite well.. Maybe I should wait till he gets alittle older than switch her to the raw diet.

I have kids (5-12) and also run a home daycare . Have been feeding raw for almost 4 years . I have never had any issues with any kid getting sick from the dogs eating raw .Actually me or anyone in my family is rarely sick .

My dogs eat in the basement or on the deck so any mess is easier to clean .

I also have a 30 minute no kiss rule , the kids do not stick their faces in the dogs face for a kiss until 30 minutes after she eats .

Think about all the gross things dogs eat from poop , trash , licking themselves and everything else .
I am sure there are germs from all that as well .

If it is salmonella you are worried about , that can also be found in dirt . So if your kids play outside and get dirty then they may be getting exposed to those germs anyway .

Yeah I like the 30 minute rule..I may have to try that. Is there a certain age you should start the raw diet or is it ok to start them as puppies?

now is the best time I started Poppy the day after I got her home at 10 weeks. The breeder had her on a good kibble and told me she was a finicky eater, she really was on the long trip home and hardly ate anything I so switched her right away and she's now eating me out of house and home!!

What do you feed on a raw diet? And do you feed raw daily?

I feed raw daily, most people that feed raw do because kibble digests at a different rate then raw so you shouldn't feed the 2 together, although some people feed raw in the am and kibble in the pm. I feed raw twice a day. You want to feed a "whole prey" model which is basically the whole animal, like a rabbit, the bones, organs and meat. You have to feed all the parts or you aren't providing balanced nutrition. I also feed chicken, venison, fish, pheasant, turkey - anything really! Daisy caught a squirrel last month so she gets to eat that soon! LOL.

My favorite books are Raw Dog Food by Carina MacDonald and Work Wonders by Tom Lonsdale.

If you are interested in feeding raw I would suggest that you read as much as you can on the subject . There are many different views on how to feed raw , only you can decide which method will work for you and your dog .

Some books are .

Switching to Raw - Susan Johnson - VERY good beginner book, easy read
Raw Meaty Bones - Dr Tom Lonsdale (a veterinarian)
The Ultimate Diet - Kymythy Schultze (an animal nutritionist)
The Barf Diet - Dr. Ian Billinghurst (a veterinarian)
Grow Your Pups with Bones: The BARF Program For breeding Healthy Dogs And Eliminating Skeletal Disease - Dr. Ian Billinghurst

There are many more too .Just google raw feeding diets . I checked out most of the books from the library . Read them and just bought the ones I liked or wanted to keep using for reference.

Raw made me too uncomfortable when working around kids. We don't have kids but because I nanny Keepers gets to see them once in a while. On days he is with the kids we do The Honest Kitchen foods, I use raw on the days he isn't with the kiddos. I find he can go back and forth from THK to raw with no issues.

Keepers gets two raw meals a day (normally). We can go back and forth with kibble as needed (when traveling, with minimal upset, but I try not to do that). I made the mistake of doing kibble WITH raw once. Poor poor man, he got sick all over the house.
