Default Introducing Honey - our foster dog

So, both Graham and I have talked about fostering for years! We discussed all the problems, talked to others, read various posts and changed our minds a hundred times at least! But at Christmas we finally made the decision to go ahead with it. We really have no excuses, we are around dogs all day and at home otherwise, how many people are lucky enough to be in that position? Plus, there are just so many dogs in kennels that really can’t cope with the environment, get stressed out etc., not to mention the financial drain on the rescue organisations.

We spoke at length with Northern Rose Boxer Rescue, and were quite clear about the temperament of dog we would be willing to take on, e.g., absolutely had to be dog friendly and def no puppies, and after going through home checks, we went last weekend to pick up Honey. She is 7 years old and is an absolute dream. She is ex-breeding and very much like Ruby was, undersocailised, no commands/recall etc., but she is the most darling dog, so sensitive and calm. Both Jakey and Ruby have been very good with her, but they are used to dogs coming and going, so I would have been surprised if there had been any problems with them.

We don’t know how long she will be with us - her age may be a stumbling block for some potential adopters [their loss, she is great], but we don’t mind. We are happy to have her with us for as long as it takes to find her a good home.

What a beautiful looking dog! It sounds like you've really done your homework of laying the groundwork and gotten a dog that will fit in well. I think you'll probably really enjoy working with her on commands and with other dogs to model behavior she'll probably pick it up quickly.

Honey's a lucky dog!

Awwww... she looks so sweet. I'm glad she has a great foster home with you. We were thinking of fostering too, but with these two crazies, they take too much out of me as it is, but hopefully once they calm down a little as they get older, we will foster too, with the same stipulation that they can't be agressive.

Thank you all for your kind comments. I just can't believe how sweet this dog is. Her and Ruby just love each other. She is a bit mothering with Ruby - and she spends quite a bit of time licking/cleaning her - neither of my dogs are that bothered about cleaning themselves - lazy so and so's!

You are so right there Sally, I love training. At the moment though, she needs a little bit more time to just settle in and get used to being in a different environment and being around dogs that don't just want to hump her. I have started doing some recall work with her, and sit - sometimes she does it, sometimes not. With Honey it's going to be case of tiny little sessions - she hasn't had to think much for the past 7 years, so it's a bit harder for her than it would be for a younger dog. She is showing a lot more interest in treats now, which is great - that's half the 'training' battle won!

LOL! Yeah, it's amazing what they'll do for a little treat! Well I'm sure you'll have a great time and so will she. I kinda hope you don't have to give her up. I think that would be really difficult.
