During the test it will be unfamiliar dogs and people and this is what may cause problems for us – Ruby is so nosy and so easily distracted.

The walking on lead worries me a bit too as we have been told to expect other distractions on the course that Ruby will be expected to ignore – e.g., food treats on the ground, a ball, a toy, etc. She has quite a good ‘leave’ command, but she is so unpredictable that anything could and probably will happen - if she lay there and went to sleep I wouldn’t be surprised – she’s done it before in class, believe it or not!

Andrea, do you have a link to your test? I would love to read up about it and see how it compares.

2,3,5 and 8 are her tough ones. Boo is so friendly but she likes to be able to get up and say "hi" to everyone she meets. She also likes to jump up on people who pet her. It is different with her than Keepers since he can topple someone over we just don't tolerate jumping with him, we have let Boo get away with it and so it's our own darn faults she is the way she is. Since Keeps never jumps up it's obvious we know how to teach it, just can't seem to follow through with the little one.

lol. She sounds like a real funny girl. It's nice she's so well trained but still has so much personality.

Thanks for those links Andrea, so interesting to read them and compare, the tests are quite similar.

And here is what happened:

I remembered all the freedoms just about, and could produce poo bags and knew how often you were meant to worm a dog [I gave the answer they wanted anyhow, i.e. every 3 months]. I also had to answer questions on what to look for when grooming and had to show how I groomed her.

Her off-lead recall was fab, and loose lead walking too, she did them both beautifully. All the areas where I thought we might have problems she was really good in. We had to approach, head on, a person with another dog and stop 3 feet away from them and for her to sit by my side whilst I and the other person carried out a conversation – she did this superbly and left the other dog alone and sat there looking at me. The obstacle course, that had food and a couple of toys and tennis balls on it she also did well in. I only had to say 'leave' a couple of times and she ignored the things and walked nicely.

We had to show how we walk through a door into another room [in the other room was a person and a dog – I knew this of course but Ruby didn’t!] and she was just brilliant - she ignored the other dog and did beautiful sits on both sides of the door so I could go through it first.

We lost a few points because she broke out of the sit/stay and the down/stay before she was called.

We also lost a few points on the following exercise for breaking out of the sit:

The exercise involved ‘exciting’ the dog with an item and then for the item to be placed out of reach from the on-lead dog. The purpose was to check her self-control and ability to respond to the command ‘leave’. Well, the assistant had put some kibble in a bowl and was dropping it up and down to make a noise – most dogs of course would be quite excited about this, but of course Ruby only gets kibble a couple of times a week so it’s no big deal to her. However, as the assistant approached with the bowl making a noise with the kibble, Ruby got out of the sit, heckles all up and started growling and barking at him. I told her firmly ‘no’, then ‘sit’ and ‘stay’, which she did, but she sat there pulling the most ugliest/fearsome looking face she could at him! When he put the bowl down and moved away, she was fine and showed no interest in the bowl at all! Poor Ruby, I think he frightened her and her protective instincts came out.

Anyway, we passed with a merit, and I am so proud of her. I know I’ve said it elsewhere but Ruby came to us with no training at all, the fact that she has achieved so much in the year or so that we’ve had her, is just amazing really.

I am also very proud of my Jakey boy; he passed with a distinction.

Maybe she was afraid he was going to make her eat kibble? lol.
