Default Boxer muscles

I have always wanted a really muscular boxer and I was wondering if any of you have put your dog on a work-out program of some sort. I have heard of making them drag a big chain but that does'nt sound like something that I would want to do. Is that wrong or normal? Is there any side affects to having a muscular dog? I don't want to attempt anything if it's going to hurt him. Any thoughts?

Seriously? Pull a chain?

How about having him at a healthy weight and keep him active?

Boxers are supposed to be a medium breed of substance . Not overly muscular or too finely boned and have a balanced musculature . A dog will grow into the size that it's genetics have set for that individual dog . By forcing a dog to build muscle or put on weight that each specific dog was not meant to have . You run the risk of damaging the bones , joints and ligaments . Regular exercise ( for an adult ) and running around is all that is needed to have a well muscled and fit boxer .

If you want a certain sized boxer then you should pick you puppy very carefully from a reputable breeder ,one who will work with to find what you are looking for .You need to take a look at both parents . By looking at them you can get a feel as to what size their puppies will grow into .

I would think until his bones are fully formed and sealed, it would not be a good thing to put any stress on him in any way. I am no authority, but from what I have read, its best to let them grow without any assistance!

Yeah i would be content to have him be at a normal healthy weight. If he gets proper exercise and nutrition, he'll look great

On a similar subject, i use to belong to this fitness forum a few years back and some guy had his dog on steroids.

Some people are unbelievable.

When I bought Nismo I saw his mom and dad. The dad was a very muscular dog, with veins and all. I did'nt know if the guy did something to make him like that or if thats just how he is. I'll get in touch with the onwer and find out.

Running will keep their muscles toned and bodies healthy. Pulling a chain however is not something that is considered healthy nor natural for a dog. Also, dogs that have been neutered tend to be somewhat smaller in size and muscle definition than non-neutered dogs. I just hope that people will not try to do to the Boxers what some did to the Pit Bulls and made them look like monsters on steroids. I've actually seen websites selling steroids to quickly increase dog's muscle mass and they claim it is safe for the dog. I would just like to see who is buying this and have a chat with them.

Let's see some pics of your dog. I don't see a photo album for you but I remember some pics you posted before and he looked pretty muscular then. Got any recent shots?

Perhaps I'm naive but it has never once occurred to me to give a dog steroids! I'm not surprised to hear it happens but it's shocking to me.

Relating to a boxer's muscle mass, I've heard of competitions where dogs pull carts and do other strength related activities. My understanding was that it tapped into the dog's working ancestry. Is that a legitimate sport for dogs? Is that where the steroid abuse occurs? I've never seen any of it in my area so it's hard for me to gauge the character of the people doing it.

There are weight type events help and the dogs do get titles . But you usually see other larger breeds like bernese mountain dogs , saint bernards , malamutes and yes pitts . You do not usually see boxers .
