Default What do you do when you meet other dogs out walking ?

I decided I might need to rethink my thoughts on this I usually let her go over to the other dog if the owners give the vibe it's ok . I found great spot where she can run free with no leash and other dogs go there to , it's a farmers road that runs by his corn crops really far away from the traffic . Last night there was a german shepard there that's 10 yrs old but was able to keep up with Babe for the most part & was really good with her . Then tonight when I took her there was 2 mini weiner dogs of course she thought they would play also but they were small & not friendly I made her sit while they went by so she didn't jump at them or the lady owner .She did awesome and listened well , proud Mommy moment .
The other place I take Babe is to the local park it's only a couple minutes walk from our house and I want her to be used to being around more people & other dogs . Thats where I let her go up & check out some of the dogs ,some owners of littler dogs don't want her coming to close . PLus they are both on leashes there ,so we know how that goes .

So what I was thinking was maybe I should make her sit more often but she does sometimes anyways when she wants to play with other dogs cause she knows good things happen when she sits like treats and little kids patting her .

So I'm curious how you guys handle this .

It depends on the dog. If it is a dog she plays with and knows I just let them go, if it is a dog we don't really know I try to follow the other owners cues, if they seem fixed on walking by without stopping or if their dog seems to be getting edgy at the site of another dog, I usually keep walking past(ensuring there is decent amount of space between us and them) without stopping with an extra juicy treat in hand to distract Ruby (she's still a pup so I still need to distract her) I figured this was good as it also shows her she can't stop and say hello to every dog we pass, quite frankly there are some I don't wish her to meet. If the other owner gives a cue that they are going to stop (smile, nod to acknowledge us, slow down pace as approaching us etc) I get her to sit if it is a medium to big dog but if it is a little dog I tell her "down" as I find most little dogs don't react well to bigger dogs. She is still a very playful pup so it is all still a work in progress, we have wonderful dog meeting days and those I'd rather forget - she is usually at her best when I don't have the skin kids with me (she sometimes gets hyper when they are around) so I prefer going without them but she does have to get used to going with them too so I usually drag DH along so one can focus on Ruby's manners and the other can focus on the skin kids manners LOL.

Here are a two links I really liked the first is Desensitizing Dogs to Other Dogs and the second is Avoiding on Leash Dog Aggression

Tie has a great deal of anxiety when it comes to meeting other dogs on his leash which stems from when he was abused as a younger dog.

Because of this i usually try to avoid these kind of situations, but if the other owner "insists" on it i'll let them meet. usually tie just gets really scared submissive.

Poor Tie! Have you tried to work on it or is it just too stressful for him?

well when he was younger we worked on it a bit, but not so much as he's older.

Maybe know that Tie is older and happier and feels safe with you he might be ready to try again . Is there anybody you know that you feel comfortable letting Tie meet thier dog on leash ?
