Default Jealousy?

So Karma has been living with me for about a week now. She is great to have around. Usually has a very laid back mannerism. The only strange behavioral problem ive noticed so far is when I have a friend over. Its not really an issue till they leave and I go to give them a hug. Karma's laid back mannerism shuts off and all of a sudden she gets excited and what seems like a jealous fit. She jumps up at me, and trys to mouth my arm or grab my sleave. She goes nuts until I tell her to sit and calm down. This only occurs when someone else gets too close to me.

any body have any ideas on why this happens, or what I can do to calm her down?

I had seen something similar on one of those dog training shows "It's me or the dog" with that woman trainer. The dog whisperer also had a show on that.

You better get that under control, or it could be a real problem.

The trainer sat next the owner. Everytime the dog would go after the person, you would have to correct her right there. Put the dog on the floor. So the dog knew it couldn't be so attached to you and that she was doing something wrong. In your case, this seems to be happening while standing if I am reading correctly, so I would think something similar would make sense. Take the dog to another area and make her sit & stay, giving her a toy to chew on. That would be my opinion. Keep at this, using someone else to help you to practice this often. I'm sure others might have different ones to offer, but that is what I would try.

Georgie does not like me to pet our other dog Bobby. She crowds her way in between us.

Buddy can be jealous, but he's learning to control it or he gets a "time out". This summer it was worse, but now I think he's maturing a bit....did I just say he's maturing?

Nikita can be jealous if we're giving Memo or another dog attention....we tell her 'enough' and she stops, but funny enough..she quickly goes to get one of her toys and brings it back to us hoping that we'll put all our attention on her. Memo could care less if we're giving someone else attention

I'm working with Peaches right now on the same issue. She never jumps up at anything except when I go to the dog park and lift my 2 year old on to my shoulders. I'm not sure if she thinks I'm taking him away, or if she is jealous that he gets to ride on my shoulders. Either way it has been a process trying to get her to stop while carrying a kid!

Reward your dog when she interacts in a positive manner with the object of her jealousy. For example, if she normally squeezes between you and your spouse when you're sitting on the couch but this time sits on the other side of you, give her a treat and praise her.

Take your dog for at least one long walk a day--preferably two. Not only does this give you extra time to spend with your pet, exercise is often the best treatment for behavioral problems in canines.

Train your dog with basic obedience skills or reinforce the dog's knowledge of these skills, if he is already trained. Obedience skills give the dog confidence to know what is expected of him in various situations and help you manage his behavior more effectively.

Hope this helps!
