Sophie's Mom is on a distinguished road
Default Can we really stop them from jumping?

We are totally enamored with Sophie and her little Boxer ways. We just can't figure out why others don't love the way she jumps as much as we do! In all seriousness, it is so much her nature that we've been unsuccessful in training her not to jump on people. When we take her to the Doggie Day Care, she jumps straight up with excitement. She thinks nothing of jumping up on everyone because she's such an excited puppy.

Any suggestions for training her not to jump would be so appreciated!!! What have your experiences been? Do they grow out of it or is it just part of their nature?

None of my 3 boxers jump on people . But they were trained from the start not to . It can be done , but now that she is used to jumping it will be harder and take longer .

You have to keep her on lead .
When someone is approaching step on the leash , leave only enough length of leash for her to stand and do not let them pet her .She will not be able to jump as there is not enough slack in the leash for her to jump .
And your hands are free to reward & praise her . If she stays down reward her and lots of praise. She will eventually learn that she gets no attention/reward from jumping but will get rewarded for not jumping . Even pushing her off or talking to her is a reward so be sure she is not getting attention from the other people -just commands from you .
You can even put her into a sit or down before the person get too close .Keep repeating the sit/down command as much as you need to remind her to stay . If they are down it is easier to see when they are going to get ready to get up / jump .

You have to be consistant with not allowing any jumoing at all . Or she will be confused as to why she can jump sometimes and not others .

Once she is very reliable at not jumping on people . You could train her to only jump on you by command -if that is what you want .

All four of mine jump. They dont usually jump on people unless they get really really excited. I think they just jump up in the air to get there attention so they will pet them, lol.
