I'm a clicker training fan, so of course the books I recommend are clicker books. In a rescue dog, especially if you don't know his past, clicker training is often a good choice because it is non-coercive, non-aggressive, non-confrontational. A dog who has been trained with harsh compulsion methods may become over-reactive to them, and if you aren't aware of the issues it may be disastrous - or at least unpleasant.
With that said, I would recommend two books that work quite well in conjunction with each other:
Clicking With Your Dog: Step By Step In Pictures by Peggy Tillman
Click For Joy! by Melissa Alexander
The first is a "how-to," with several different ways of training any one behavior so that you can use what works best for you and your dog, and (as you probably guessed Wink ) pictures to help illustrate the technique and the timing more clearly.
The second is more of a collection of FAQs from the author's e-mail list, clarifying things and offering even more possible ways to approach behaviors. Melissa wrote it with the thought of complementing Peggy's book.
