Brad Pattison is doing another training session tonight and my wife is going to it.

It is at 7Pm so just gettign dark and it is located on a street called whyte ave in Edmonton. This street has probably the highest amount of foot traffic in all of Edmonton, as well as lots of road traffic. I think the the purpose for this is because of all the distractions.

So my wife went down to whyte ave with about 30 other dogs. There was everything from chiuaua's to danes and every type of temper from scary to lazy.... The focus of the excercies where to maintain control of your dog and for you to realize what it takes to keep them focused on you when there are plenty of distractions around.

Needless to say the memebers from my wife's boxer metup are going to a busy shopping area this weekend to practice with lots of distractions.

So how did Peaches do? What techniques did you find helped her to focus on you?

Sorry for the delayed response... had to review with my wife as she attends all the classes as I watch over the skin kids.

The number one thing is to keep the dog moving. We umbilical our dog on all walks. As we walk we change directions frequently and weave in and out of natural obstacles. We use to just "walk down the path" like everyone else.
Everytime you change directions her matringale collar tightens and cause discomfort. If she is paying attention to you she will follow you when you change directions so the collar doesnt tighten.

Really simple.. this works! Now when we walk she is by our side on leash and constantly glancing at us.

Also whenever we stop we pulled up on her leash causing her to want to sit. Consistency is the key and she now sits every time we stop without asking. Even in the presence of people, dogs, kids. cats, it doesn't matter.

Some of the other tips is to not use there name in a command and to only say it once. Every time you repeat yourself they have essentially gotten away with something. If you tell them to laydown and they don't listen then you make them laydown they soon learn that when he says "laydown" its on his time and it means laydown now.

Brad is brutally honest which is sometimes a quick reality check. If anything that is refreshing in itself... We have been contemplating getting a second dog and he told us. "that is the stupidest idea in the world" Which if you think about it is... an 18 month older boxer and 3 skin kids under 4...

My wife is now working with peaches wquite a bit offleash but I haven't had mush time to ask her what's working... They go to areas like the local skateboard park, dog park, busy store fronts to work on the offlease training with distractions around.

Just since she started the class a month ago I can tell that Peaches enjoys it. she is spening way more time with mommy as I am no longer her "alpha"

I'll get her to post some strategies.

That would be great Dragon, I have tried so many things with Roddy here, but he gets distracted so easily, especially if he sees another dog.

I watch his show and he has some good techniques. For me I want my dog to respect me and look to me for his next move. I want him to "mind" me.

One of the best things I've seen Brad do is put the leash on the dog, tie the other end around your waist; he calls it umbilical. Keep the dog tied to you for an hour a day as you go about your work etc., so he knows that when you move he moves with you.

Training with umbilical works well when your outside; run around small trees in your park, left, right, etc. with the dog tied on. If he doesn't "mind" you and where you're going, he will find himself on the other side of the tree than you, not going anywhere. Make him come back around and follow you. My dog has only made a couple of mistakes, whenever we do this now he always follows my lead, no matter how fast I run. He finds it quite entertaining.

What do this do? It makes the dog pay attention to you, makes him realize you are the leader, and provides a fun challenging exercise activity where he has to think. It also trains him to respect you and makes him a good leash walker. ie: my dog rarely pulls.
