I'm not saying the crate training is cruel all Im saying is that I have never known why to?! I guess I will try it and go from there. If it doesn't work for me then I will stop.

how long do most of you use the crate? i would like to think that we could stop using the crate at a fairly young age. i know it will be a while yet befor i trust Bo alone for any amount of time but i would guess around age two would be good. when did any of you guys stop using it?

I've had them as early as 1 year, mostly around 18 months and they are good to go.

peaches will always be put in her crate when we are not home for several reasons... One is we have cats. She gets along with them but sometimes they play and I would not want to come home to that seen. Secondly i would love if she could ruin certain pieces of furniture... or possessions but I know for a fact its going to be something I value that she decides to entertain herself with. And the last thing is i would be super worried she would get into something that may make her sick... I'm not willing to risk her freedom at the expense of of any of that...

Then again We are not facing the situation where we would leave her at home for 5 days a week either... That rarely happens and it's not usually 6 hours.

Peaches does sleep in our room on her bed at night though...

I definitely use the crate with Shenzi, and she's coming up on 5 months now. She haaaates it though, haha. I've been letting her have more and more freedom lately, which has been working out well... for the most part!
Don't worry about your dog not thinking it's fair if your other dogs aren't crated, I don't think dogs even know what fairness is.
While it's not necessary for everyone (I know I needed a crate since I have classes a lot of the day), it's definitely very handy to have around.

i found out what happends if i leave bo out when i leave.. he gets in his crate!! Brandon wanted to play outside but bo was sleeping on the couch so i left him there and took brandon out, after a couple min i heard bo crying so i tied to gather up brandon to go get him but by the time i got back inside bo was in his crate sleeping. i think that he feels safest while in there. but i still wont be chancing it and leaving him out for more then a couple min.

Wally was crate trained when we got him, and he LOVES it, in fact, now that he is nearly 2 (Sunday is his birthday!) we are trying to be more liberal--like, don't feel like we HAVE to close him in at night--but if we don't shut his door he comes out and looks at us like 'did you forget something???' No one seems to have mentioned one big plus with crate training---if your dog is injured, and has to be transported, being in a crate is a big plus. We had never crate trained our previous dogs, but I love the convenience of a safe place to 'stash' him if necessary (non-dog people at the house, there are a few out there!)

I had to take Coco with us to a Bed and Breakfast for a weekend once and didn't want to just leave her in the room, not knowing how she would be in a strange place, so her being comfortable in the crate was a plus there while we were out. I did give the inn keeper my cell number in case she was a problem noise wise, but he said she was great, even when someone went into the room to clean or turn down the bed at night. (She wasn't in there from morning till night... only the times we happen to be out of the room, we were at a wedding or out for meals). We didn't plan on bringing her.. planned on boarding her, but at the time, she had something on her face and the vet wasn't sure if it was contagious or not (ringworm), so only boarded Rex and brought Coco with us. Tests later came back negative on the ringworm! Oh well....

I live in Australia and crate training is really rare over here but I recently got a small breed pup and decided to crate train him so he has a quiet place to go sleep or have time out from our Boxer if he needed it and I LOVE it! House training is easier, he LOVES his crate, it helped him to get used to Ruby really quickly, so far (knock on wood) he hasn't chewed on anything because he isn't given to opportunity to, when he went to stay with my Mum he felt safe straight away because he had his crate there with him (no crying the first night or anything) he goes in it by himself when he is getting sick of the kids or Ruby and I feel safe knowing I can leave him out in the airconditioning with Ruby while I'm out without there being any issues.
