Default crate/potty training

To remove this ad please Register
I've had Cargo for about 2 and a half weeks now and am at a loss when it comes to the potty training!!!!

When I first got him the first 3 days were hell until he got used to his crate. Now that he is used to his crate and I figured out a feeding schedule that doesn't make him have to go potty at night, I am having a real hard time getting him to go out side to do his business when he isn't in his crate.

Am I doing something wrong cause most ppl say that it is way easier to potty train when they are crate trained as well.

I am on him like a hawk when he is out of the crate but a few times I wasnt on the ball and he peed on the floor.

I am also contemplating taking the crate away cause of the whole den thing. My thinking on that is that my house should be the den?!

Please help cause I'm totally confused! I've never had a problem potty training.

it sounds like you are doing just fine. it takes a while to get them 100% potty trained. i think it took about a month to get bo 100%. every day there were less accidents, and thats all that matters, some get it right away and some it takes a little extra work. i would keep the crate, the theory is that they dont potty where they sleep, thats why even if they are crate trained but the crate is too big they will go in the corner they aren't sleeping in. so if you give him the whole house he will just go where he isnt sleeping at the time. just keep what you are doing and he will get the hang of it soon.

Are you separating the crate into smaller section so he can only be in the smaller part? That is important too. Don't worry, it will happen. It takes time. It even take time for them to just get used to the crate in general. I remember when I did have pups. I had to bring the crate in my bedroom so we could finally get some sleep after the 3rd night, LOL. He just wasn't having to sleep in the kitchen all by himself.

I would stick with the crate training . In the end it will be worth it . Also get him on a routine .

What I do is to leash them to yourself when out of the crate and playing and 100% supervised . That way you are 100% aware where they are and what they are doing . If you can not watch him then he goes in the crate .

How old is he ?
Normal rule is a puppy can hold it 1 hour for every month of age + 1 . So a 3 month old can hold it for 3+1 = 4 hours . Now overnight they may be do better . But I notice during the day they do not hold it for as long because they are out of the crate and awake more .

You just have to be consistant - that is the key .

I have 2 5 month old puppies here . there have been no accidents for 2+ weeks . But I know if I left them out of their crates for 5 hours without going outside to potty they would pee on the floor . So I make sure to take them out every 3-4 hours to make sure they are not put in a position where they may pee inside .

He's 10 weeks old. There has been a couple times he has gone to the door to be let out which he gets a lot of praise for! I am home most of the time and when I'm not home he is in his crate and goes right to sleep when he is put in it.

I usually take him out about every 45 min and tell him to go pee or poo and he does. I have a huge teddy bear in the back of the crate, which takes up half the crate so no worries on that.

He's in a routine. poop at 7:15 eat at 7:30 sleep from 8:30-9:45 get up play have another pee/poo eat at 12 have a pee sleep from 1-2 play have some water play pee poo supper at 6pm play some more. bed at 10:30 sleep all night.

I guess I will keep at it Thanx guys

My puppy is 15 weeks old and she still isnt potty trained. She is getting better but not complete. We are training Ziah to ring this bell we have on our door when she needs to go outside, she is starting to get the hang of it and we have been at this since we brought her home (she was 8 weeks) but sometimes she will pee at the door then ring the bell.. just keep reminding yourself it takes patience’s and your puppy is still very young

My Rex will ring the bell, but Coco won't. She just looks at me and we are suppose to KNOW that she wants to go out. A little tough in the middle of the night to notice a dog LOOKING at you!

Oh, and if we don't hear Rex ringing the bell, say all the way in our bedroom, he WILL bark!

Oh man, stick with it! Newman wasn't 100% reliable for months! If we didn't take him out after every nap/play/hour, there would be a surprise!
and we stopped using the crate but ended up going back to it because of the destruction....
