Question New Puppy

Hello,

I just bought my hubby a Boxer puppy. He is adorable but a bit stubborn. He is 7 wks old and a male. I have a couple questions:

1. He poops and pees constantly. I feel like I take him out every 30 minutes. If I am not watching him 24/7 he will drop a little piece of runny poop off on my floor or sprinkle somewhere. It's not even a "full load." It's just a little bit at different times. His poop is a bit runny. I took him to the vet on Friday and got him dewormed because he had worms. Is this behavior normal?

2. He likes to boss my mini Dachshund around. She is a 2 yr old female. He likes to hang off of her, nip at her, bite her tail, and kind of head butt her, like he's pushing her around.

Other than that, he is adorable. I am just exhausted from watching him 24/7. I am crate training him which he still whines every once in a awhile but I know that is expected.

Any suggestions welcome or past experiences.

The pushing around sounds just like Wally when we got him--only the dog he was hanging off of and pushing around was our 70 lb lab mix!

Don't know for sure, but I'm thinking the runny poo issue is related to the worming. I'd keep a close eye on him (like you aren't already!) 'cause diarreaha can dehydrate them quickly. If it keeps up you might want to call the vet back and ask them.

Welcome to the Forum, by the way!

Sorry, it's been many many years since I've had a puppy, so I can't remember what it entailed health wise. I do know 7 weeks is still extremely young so not to expect much.

All the nipping etc seems just like puppy play to me, testing the limits of the other dog. They are used to their mommies setting their limits as to how far they can go.

You are doing right by crate training. Stick to it!!!!

Do lots of reading to get the info you need besides asking your vet the health questions.

Good luck and hope you'll share some photos with us!

Cool food

how often are you feeding him.? and do you take away the food and water when he's done? A lot of people leave food and water down all the time, with puppies, I got my two used to set feeding times asap, if his belly/bladder are'nt full the paper taining will go a lot smoother. Dont starve him, obviously, at that age, he still needs ( did you say 7 weeks?)4 meals a day, ..then 2..then finally 1.. as for bullying your sausage dog, dont forget all of you are a new experience for him,so, he's just figuring out his place in the "pack" she wont hurt him because she knows he's only a baby, so he'll be safe enough. in a few months, when he's big enough to stand over her, the "pack order" will change, but they'll sort that out between themselves and it wont involve you. And no, he wont bully her when he's bigger than her, for one thing boxers are very social dogs plus they gew up in the same pack, also bitches alway's rule the roost. lastly, have him castrated asap, boxers can have a lot of inherent problems down there, and you dont want that later on. enjoy what is without doubt the cutest puppy ever.! ( aside from my two when they were that age.!)

Puppies can only hold it for about an hour longer then their age in months ( 2 months =3 hours) but with the worms and runny poop it may be hard for him to hold it . Try adding some pro-biotics to help his digestive system get back on track .

If you can not watch him then crate him , much easier then him getting into a habit of messing in the house . It will also help him to learn that crating in a normal routine part of his day not only when you leave him alone .

Set feeding times will also help to get him into a poop/peeing schedule . Be sure to keep fresh water available , at 7 weeks he should be eating 3 meals per day still.

Boxers are very rough players , they bark growl and sound like they are eating the other dog . This is normal and will most likely be the way he plays with other dogs his whole life . As he gets bigger your doxie may not tolerate his pushy behavior as much and let him know -he will ( hopefully) learn how to play a bit easier with her .
