Default Stairs...

Ok so Bella is going to be 4 months June 15th and she is getting rather heavy in weight. I was wondering how or what a good way to train her to get down the stairs on her own? We are carrying her down the stairs as of right now..and we know sooner or later we wont be able to get her down the stairs by carrying her. So any ideas would be appreciated. We try to get her to come down them by briving her but she will sit at the top and wag her nub of a tail or prance around at the top with her big club of feet....she wants us to carry her.. Did we start something we wont be able to finish?

In my puppy experience they will do stairs when they are ready. I wouldn't want to go down a flight of stairs walking on all fours.

When she is ready she will , or if the bribe is of a very high value to her .

I find that by starting with going up stairs is easier . Think about how scary it can be to go head first down a long set of stairs . If you have a small set ( 3 steps like at a front door ) I would start with those first .

We started Buddy with stairs at about 3 months. First we went up only for about a week or two. He would put his front legs up on a stair and I took his rear legs and showed him how he had to move them to get going up. Lots of encouragement, patience and a treat as he moved up. Down was a bit more scary for him but in time he got that too. Again, just patience and treats.

I actually have her going up stairs very well...we do have a set of 3 stairs off our deck BUT she wont walk down them she just jumps them all to the ground...I guess she will do it when she is ready or has no other options of getting down stairs...

I had this trouble with Daisy. I put her on the first step (closest to the ground) and waved a yummy treat at her nose and then put it on the ground. We did that several times then I moved her to the 2nd step and put treats on the 1st step and the ground, etc.. But I think it was starting her with one step that helped her.
